Donald Glover To Write New ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Lando’ Based On ‘Solo’

Actor Donald Glover is returning to a galaxy far, far away, and this time, he’s not alone!

Both the “Atlanta” star and his brother, Stephen Glover, will write the live-action Disney+ series “Lando” for Disney+, marking the latest “Star Wars” series in development.

Both Donald Glover and Stephen Glover will write the Lucasfilm series based on the character of Lando Calrissian, first portrayed by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” Glover portrayed a younger Lando Calrissian in Ron Howard’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which featured Alden Ehrenreich playing a young Han Solo.

Although the film failed at the box office, news of a Disney+ series came in December 2020. At the time, “Dear White People” creator Justin Simen had joined the project, even though he had parted ways with Lucasfilm. The Glover brothers will write the new series themselves, as reported by Variety, which also noted that the brothers signed the deal before the writers’ strike.

In April, the “Community” actor told GQ that he would love to play Lando again after admitting that he prefers the projects he’s chosen to work on since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the entertainment industry. “I’d love to play Lando again. It was a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious,” he said.

“The last few years, this pandemic—, it’s really made people experience time… People are realizing that their time is precious. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that will waste my time or just pay,” he continued. “I prefer to spend time with the people I like. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it can be. Lando is definitely someone I enjoy hanging out with.”

Donald Glover Talks About Reprising His Role As Early as 2018

In 2018, shortly after “Solo: A Star Wars Story” hit theaters, Glover talked about reprising his role as Town Hall Lando Calrissian.

“It will always be fun to be Lando again,” he said at the time. “The film, I think, is wide open. This part of the universe without… I think like with the Skywalkers, it’s hard because it’s almost like the Bible.”

“There’s a story you have to tell, and that’s the lineage of the family,” he continued. “I feel like here, yeah, we’re like hunters and gamblers and space pirates, basically, so you can do more and have more fun.”

It Seems Unlikely That ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Will Get A Sequel

While some fans would like to see the cast of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” get back together on screen to continue their adventures, filmmaker Ron Howard isn’t optimistic about the possibility of that happening anytime soon.

“The only talk I’m aware of about a sequel to Solo is coming from fans at this point,” Howard told NME earlier this year. “I don’t think it’s Lucasfilm’s priority, as I understand it.”

However, he also made sure to add a “never say never” disclaimer, as it’s possible that the Disney+ series “Lando” could reignite interest in a sequel to “Solo.” Howard added, “The people at Lucasfilm love the fans and really listen, so I would never say no. But I’m not aware of any concrete plans right now to extend the story or address that particular set of characters.”

In addition to Donald Glover, Daisy Ridley will also reprise her role as the scavenger Rey after first appearing in 2015’s “The Force Awakens” and starring in the sequel trilogy. The new “Star Wars” movie will be directed by “Ms. Marvel Filmmaker” Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the film will be set 15 years after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which concluded the nine-episode Skywalker Saga.

Unfortunately, at this time, it’s unclear whether the writers’ strike and the SAG-AFTRA strike will delay production, as the film has a tentative 2026 release date.
