Donald Glover’s ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Lando’ Will Now Be A Movie

Actor Donald Glover is returning to a galaxy far, far away… and the big screen.

A few months after it was confirmed that he and his brother, Stephen Glover, will write the script for the “Star Wars” series “Lando”, fans learned that it will not be a Disney+ series, as initially announced, but a movie instead.

On Thursday, September 14, “Star Wars” fans learned that the “Lando” project for Lucasfilm is now being created as a movie instead of a Disney+ series. Glover appeared on Pablo Torre’s podcast Finds Out to find out what he got about the changes in the show.

“It’s not even a show,” he said. “The idea now is to make a movie.” Unfortunately, he also admitted that little progress had been made as a result of the WGA writer’s strike. “Now, because of the strike, it’s like a phone,” Glover added.

The “Lando” movie isn’t the only Lucasfilm project that has been hit hard by the writers’ strike. Director Shawn Levy also revealed that his “Star Wars” movie was put on hold during an appearance at TIFF Collider’s media studio to promote his Netflix limited series “All The Light We Cannot See.”

“We had just started the process of developing my film, and the writer’s strike happened,” he said. “So we’re in the holding pattern that so much of our industry is in.”

Director Taika Waititi was also present at the event. follow Diversity, the director of “Thor: Love and Thunder” also admitted that his “Star Wars” movie is delayed and the script is not finished. “Unlike me, hopefully he gets the script done for that,” Waititi joked about Levy’s unfinished film.

Although Billy Dee Williams originated the character of Lando Calrissian in the original trilogy, a younger version of the character was played by Donald Glover in 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which failed to perform at the box office.

Although Disney announced that “Lando” would be turned into a Disney+ series in 2020, little progress has been made on the project since then. Justin Simien of “Haunted Mansion” fame was initially tapped to develop the series, but he later left the project. The Glover brothers later signed on to write the script.

In April, the “Community” actor spoke to GQ that he was still open to playing Lando Calrissian. “I’m not interested in doing anything that will waste my time or just pay. I prefer to spend time with people I like. It just has to be the right thing, which I think it can be,” he said at the time. “Lando is definitely someone I want to hang out with. We are talking about it. That’s all I can say.”

Glover first appeared interested in reprising the role of the character during Town Hall 2018. “It’s always going to be fun to be Lando again,” he said at the time. “The film, I think, is wide open. This part of the universe without… I think like with the Skywalkers, it’s hard because it’s almost like the Bible.”

“There’s a story you have to tell and the family descends,” he continued. “I feel like here, yeah, we’re like hunters and gamblers and space pirates, basically, so you can do more and have more fun.”

On August 1, the “Brian’s Song” actor took over X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce that something big is in the works. “I’m so excited to share that something really great is coming soon,” Williams wrote at the time. “This is a dream come true for me, for all that has sustained and carried me through a lifetime of dreams and adventures, it is my honor to share it with you.”

“Be sure to enable notifications for stories and posts stay in the loop, you don’t want to miss this… May the Force be with you all,” he concluded.

Although fans are convinced that he will be involved in the “Lando” project, it seems that he may be promoting his upcoming memoir, which hits the bookshelves in February 2024.

“Are We Here? Come February 2024, I will share the story of my life—from Harlem to Star Wars and beyond—about all that has sustained and carried me through a lifetime of dreams and adventures,” he wrote in a separate book tweets. “Head to the link in the bio to pre-order your copy today!”
