According to reports, Godwin expressed surprise at a statement made by former president Donald Trump recently during his speech to the Black Conservative Federation.

Godwin expressed dismay at Trump’s claims that he has gained increased support from Black voters because of his legal troubles, which include four indictments and a total of 91 criminal charges.

In a message to ABC News staff on Tuesday, Godwin shared his disbelief at the presidential candidate’s comments, calling them “as racist as it gets.”

The news executive emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Regardless of one’s politics, the fact that someone running for President of the United States made this speech period – but also to the public – and with so many black people in attendance – and that they standing with him – it’s amazing.”

Godwin’s message joins a chorus of voices condemning Trump’s remarks about a purported increase in Black support. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also slammed Trump’s comments as not only “self-serving” but also “disgusting and divisive traffic in stereotypes.”

In his speech to the Black Conservative Federation, Trump claimed that black individuals sympathized with his fight against the legal challenge, saying: “I was impeached for the second time and the third time and the fourth time, and a lot of people said that’s why Black people like me , because they have been badly hurt and discriminated against, and they actually see me as being discriminated against.”

He stated, “Some of the greatest evils in our nation’s history have come from corrupt systems that try to target and subjugate others to deny them their freedom and deny them their rights.”

“I think that’s why black people are so supportive of me now because they see what happened to me happened to them,” he added.

On Monday, the former president’s embattled lawyer filed an appeal in an appeals court in New York to overturn Judge Arthur Engoron’s decision to fine the former president an initial $355 million for inflating the value of his assets in financial documents.

Due to additional interest, the fine has increased to nearly $454 million and will continue to increase by $112,000 per day until Trump pays.

According to reports, Trump’s lawyers stated in the legal filing that they want the court to consider whether Engoron “made errors of law and/or fact” and if he “acted in excess” of his authority as a judge in New York.

If the decision is ultimately upheld, Trump’s wealth is expected to plummet drastically as he may have to liquidate certain assets to cover the penalty. However, there is still a chance for the case to be appealed again in the state’s highest court, the Court of Appeal.
