On Tuesday morning, USA Today reported that the legal team representing Donald Trump is trying to delay the trial related to his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House forever. Although US District Judge Aileen Cannon set a trial date of August 14, Justice Department lawyers have tried to delay that date until at least December 11.
The reason given for the proposed delay was to give Trump’s lawyers time to obtain a security clearance to review documents central to the case. However, Christopher Kise, who heads Trump’s legal team, argued that there are many documents available for review, with more to come.

“Here, there is no question that any trial of this action pending the Presidential election will affect both the outcome of that election and, importantly, the Defendants’ ability to obtain a fair trial,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in a statement. .
“The Government’s request to start a trial of this magnitude within six months of the indictment is unreasonable, telling, and will result in a miscarriage of justice,” they added.

On June 8, Donald Trump was indicted on 38 charges, including withholding national defense documents, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and concealing classified government records. In a statement, Trump’s lawyer wrote, “This extraordinary case presents a serious challenge to both the facts and perceptions of our American democracy.”
Trump’s lawyers are now trying to delay the trial because of the large amount of evidence that has been gathered. Due to the “vast amount of documents collected,” Trump’s attorneys stated that they are providing evidence to defense attorneys “in stages.”

So far, the government has turned over 833,450 pages of unclassified documents that include 122,650 emails and 305,670 records from ninety different custodians. There are also about nine months of closed-circuit television footage to review as well.
This does not include classified documents, which will be turned over once Trump’s lawyers receive a security clearance. Trump’s lawyers have called the short time frame “unrealistic” to review all the necessary documentation.
