At 1:30 PM ET, the Royal Family released a statement that read, “The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
While many mourned the passing of the longest-reigning monarch in UK history, some were amused by the sight of a rainbow that appeared over Buckingham Palace shortly before the news of his passing was made public.

Social media is full of pictures and videos of rainbows. Royal photographer Chris Jackson shared a photo from Getty Images, writing, “As the flag was lowered to half-mast over Windsor Castle, an incredible rainbow appeared over the castle, for a few minutes and then just like that it was gone….”

Political editor Claire Ellicott shared a fascinating image of a double rainbow appearing over the River Thames.

One user who was amused by the rainbow sign said that there was one spotted at Balmoral, where he passed, one at Windsor Castle, and a double rainbow that appeared over Buckingham Palace. “He told us he made it, and everything will be fine,” they tweeted.

The New York Times also reported that a double rainbow appeared over Buckingham Palace, causing the grieving crowd to sing “God Save The Queen” in her memory.

Sir Elton John released a lengthy statement on social media shortly after the news of his death was announced.
“Along with the rest of the country, I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth,” he said. “She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the nation through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, poise and genuine warmth.”
“Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her very much,” he added.
