Dr. Phil Finally Pulls The Plug On His Talk Show After ’25 Wonderful Years’ On Daytime TV

“Dr. Phil” will finally go off the air with his talk show, after ’25 wonderful years’ on daytime TV, according to media reports and comments by the host, Dr. Phil McGraw.

Viewers first met McGraw on TV on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in the late ’90s before she got her own spinoff, produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Studios. “Dr. Phil” debuted in 2002 to an immediate high TRP, second in ratings only to Oprah, and then rose to number one. Now, it is the end of another era.

Dr. Phil McGraw Wants to Do More

After Winfrey exited daytime in 2011, “Dr. Phil’s Show” rose to the top and became the most-watched daytime syndicated talk show, holding the crown for nearly a decade before slipping behind to second place, ceding its position to “Live with Kelly & Ryan”, co-hosted by Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest.

Despite a decline in overall ratings, “Dr. Phil” draws about 2 million viewers and seems to have pulled the plug after hosting nearly 4,000 episodes, featuring 20,000 guests. “Dr. Phil” has also received letters from 5 million viewers and the popularity of the show has not diminished. “Dr. Phil” will exit daytime TV after the 2022-23 season, which will be the first and last of its 21st season.

According to a statement, Dr. Phil McGraw doesn’t feel this is the end, but just another beginning as he says, “I’ve been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television. With this show, we’ve helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental health and parenting. It’s been an incredible chapter in my life and career, but as I transition from daytime, there’s so much more I want to do.”

Dr. Phil Leaves a Legacy

“Dr. The Phil” show essentially features McGraw tackling a different topic on each show, often inviting real people with real-life problems, before offering advice on how to solve the issue. In fact, appearances on his show often lead to social media notoriety, including Bhad Bhabie, as in Danielle Bregoni, known as the “Cash me outside” girl.

The show received a total of 31 Emmy nominations and also won five PRISM Awards for its accurate portrayal of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse and addiction. It also received the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) Media Award.

The most recent contract McGraw signed to extend the show’s lifespan was in 2018, allowing it to run for another five years with CBS Media Ventures. Now, the syndication company is likely to give the network the option to air previously taped episodes for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

“Dr. Phil” isn’t the only show to quit recently, given the rapidly changing landscape of talk shows and podcasts like “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Wendy Williams Show,” “Judge Judy,” “Maury,” “Dr. .Oz” and more ended last year.

In fact, while on another network, “Jay Leno’s Garage” is coming to an end as well, although fans are relieved that accident-prone Jay Leno may just be taking a break because of this.

McGraw Has Big Plans For The Future

Steve LoCascio, president of CBS Media Ventures had great things to say about McGraw, stating, “Phil is a valued partner and member of the CBS/King World family, and while his show may be coming to an end after 21 years, I’m happy to say our relationship no. Phil changed the landscape of daytime as the force behind one of the most popular talk shows ever on daytime TV. We plan to be at ‘Dr. Phil’s business with the library for years to come and welcomes opportunities to work together in the future.”

McGraw’s two other syndicated daytime shows, “The Doctors” and “Daily Mail TV” were also canceled last year, and with the exit of “Dr. Phil,” that was his final departure from daytime TV.

For now, it seems McGraw is focusing on scripted projects as well as his two podcasts, “Phil in the Blanks” and “Mysteries & Murders: Analysis by Dr. Phil.” He also plans to focus on primetime TV with a new partner, which will launch in early 2024. Dr. Phil, “I had to engage with a wider audience because I have serious concerns for the American family, and I am determined to help restore clarity of purpose and our core values.”
