Driver who struck Biden’s Delaware motorcade charged with DUI

The driver who crashed into President Biden’s vehicle as he left his campaign headquarters in Delaware Sunday night has been charged with drunken driving, authorities announced Monday.

James Cooper, 46, of Wilmington, was arrested after his silver sedan crashed into an SUV that was blocking an intersection, Wilmington police said.

Cooper was also charged with careless driving in addition to DUI.

Officials said the crash appeared to be accidental, with Cooper likely unaware that it was Biden’s motorcade he hit, CNN reported.

Cooper was released from custody and given a summons to appear in court at a later date.

A representative for Cooper was not immediately available for comment.

The incident occurred as Biden, 81, spoke to reporters outside his campaign headquarters just after 8 p.m.

A loud bang was heard, startling Biden and spurring the Secret Service into action, according to reports from the White House press group.

Both the president and the first lady are reported to be safe.

This is not the first time a Biden vehicle has been involved in an accident while the president is in his hometown.
