The death toll in Ukraine rose to 39 a day after Russia’s biggest airstrikes on the country since the start of the nearly two-year conflict, according to reports.
“Nearly 120 towns and villages have been affected with hundreds of public objects damaged,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on air on X Saturdayadding that the attack left 159 injured in Friday’s attack that saw Russia launch more than 150 missiles and drones at Ukrainian targets over 18 hours.
In his tweet, Zelensky urged the West to continue helping his country in a long-overdue battle.
“Weapons in the hands of Ukrainians have always been a way to protect lives, and every manifestation of Russian terrorism repeatedly proves that we cannot delay aid to those who fight terrorism,” he said. “Together, we must defeat him.”
As Ukraine reeled from the attack, Russian authorities said their forces had shot down dozens of missiles and drones on Saturday that killed 14 people, including two children, in the country’s southwest.

Units in the country’s Belgorod region foiled “the Kyiv regime’s attempt to carry out a terrorist attack”, the Russian defense ministry said.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod region, said one man had been killed when a house was hit.
Four people were being treated for injuries and 10 private houses were damaged and water supplies in the city of Belgorod were disrupted, Gladkov said, according to reports.
Meanwhile, the number of Russian military casualties – killed and wounded – continues to rise to almost 300 per day compared to last year, the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense said on Saturday in broadcast on X.

“The daily average increase, as reported by the Ukrainian authorities, almost certainly reflects the deterioration of the Russian military and its transition to a mass army of low quality and high quantity since the ‘partial mobilization’ of reserves in September 2022,” the Intelligence ministry said. Update, adding it is likely between five and ten years for Russia to rebuild the trained portion of its military units.
“If deaths continue at current rates, by 2025 Russia will have 500,000 soldiers killed and wounded in more than three years of war,” the briefing continued. “This compares to the Soviet Union’s 70,000 deaths in the nine-year Soviet Afghan War.”
