In an interview, Droupadi Murmu spoke about her name being changed several times. According to Droupadi Murmu, she was born a Puti; however, one of her school teachers did not like this name and suggested she change her name from Puti to Droupadi, a popular character from the Indian epic Mahabharata. According to Murmu, during school, and college years, her family name was “Tudu,” and after she married Shyam Charan Murmu, she started using the title “Murmu.”

- Droupadi started his political career in 1997 when he became a member of Rairangpur district council in Odisha. In the same year, he also served as the Vice Chairman of Rairangpur.
- In 2004, he won the assembly election from Rairangpur constituency after which he was elected as BJP Minister. In 2000, he started working in the department of transport, trade, fisheries and animal husbandry and worked there until 2004.
- In 2004, he again won the assembly elections and was elected as BJP MLA from Rairangpur constituency.
- In 2006, he was elected as the District President of BJP in Mayurbhanj and State President of BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha. He served in that position from 2006 to 2009.
