Dub Sharma is an Indian music producer, lyricist and rapper known for his work in the Bollywood film “Gully Boy” (2019).

Dub Sharma was born as ‘Siddharth Sharma’ in 1988 (age 32 years; as in 2020) in Chandigarh. He belongs to Chandigarh 1072. He started his professional music career in 2008. He never sold songs but worked as a ghost producer and also worked for commercials. Eventually, he found a medium to produce music and made music for travel and music shows such as Sound Trek (2016) and The Dewarists (2017). He released his first solo album, “Vyuh” in 2013.

Additionally, he has other EPs, Cues (2016) and Showcase (2017). In 2016, he released a song titled Azadi, which was sampled by JNU student activist Kanhaiya Kumar, with a follow-up blog post, ‘Saya Harap Lagu Saya Mati.’ The song became very controversial, earning him criticism from many. In 2017, he composed music for “Shut Up Ya Kunal,” a talk show by Kunal Kamra. He made his Tamil debut with the song “Rab Di” from the film David (2013).

He made his Bollywood debut with the film, Gully Boy (2019) in which, he sang, composed, and wrote the songs, “Jingostan Beatbox”, “Azadi” with Divine, “Apna Time Aayega”, and “Jingostan.”

  • At first, he was a harmonium payer. At the age of 14, one of his older brothers from Delhi brought him software, which helped in making music. From there, he started making music on his computer.
  • In 2016, his song ‘Azadi’ went viral and got him attention from all over India. At the same time, he was also called anti-government. Talking about the track, he said,

    I’m just an artist. I think about various things and issues that happen in society while composing songs. But when the song reaches the public domain, everyone interprets it in their own way.”

  • Talking about how he started working on Gully Boy, Dub recalled that it was music director Ankur Tewari, who contacted him via email after hearing the song ‘Azadi’ (2016). He added,

    It sounds really interesting to me but honestly, I don’t know how far it can go. Then I met Ankur Tewari and (Gully Boy director) Zoya Akhtar for a listening session. I played everything I had in the works at the time and that paved the way for a few more tracks.”
