Dump truck driver fatally plunges hundreds of feet into water pit on the job

A garbage truck driver died after plunging hundreds of feet into a water-filled rock pit in Indiana Tuesday after his several-ton vehicle overturned near the edge of a quarry site, officials said.

The body of the unidentified worker was found by divers Wednesday morning at least 20 feet below the surface in rural Crawford County, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a news release.

Employees of Mulzer Crushed Stone Inc. drove a massive dump truck near the cliff before it went over the edge around 2pm Tuesday, the department said.

The first responders arrived at the scene, but had trouble finding the man because of the “steep and unstable terrain” around the hole, officials said. Workers with the company built a temporary path that helped conservation officers reach the water by boat.

“As you can imagine a quarry is not the most stable environment to work in,” Indiana Conservation Officer Jim Schreck told WDRB. “Our efforts are hindered by the terrain.”

Sonar images taken from the boat showed the truck’s location, and a remotely operated submarine helped show divers where the man was, the Department of Natural Resources said.

Divers then pulled the worker’s body out of the submerged truck.

“For our search, we need to make sure it’s a safe and stable environment for them to go into the water,” Schreck reportedly said.

The quarry site is located in Cape Sandy, an unincorporated community located near the Ohio River and near the Kentucky border.
