Disney is sailing with a live-action version of the 2016 animated film “Moana.”

Johnson went on to list many beloved characters who will return in the live-action project including Moana, Gramma Tala, Pua the Pig and more. While Johnson hasn’t actually confirmed if he’ll be portraying Maui in the upcoming film, his girls have handed him Maui’s iconic hook in the promo, hinting at the possibility.
Whether or not Johnson will star in the film, he has been confirmed to produce the film under his Seven Bucks Productions banner alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Additionally, Beau Flynn, who wrote the screenplay for the original animated film, will return to write the remake, along with Dana Ledoux. For now, no director has been named.
Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original film, will executive produce alongside Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.

Walt Disney World is also working on an attraction based on “Moana”, which will be called Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana. It was first announced in 2019 and will open in 2023.
