D’Amelios is making history in the “DWTS” ballroom!
The dancing competition series officially revealed TikTok celebrity Charli D’Amelio and her mother, Heidi D’Amelio, as its first contestants for its 31st season on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, September 9. The mother and daughter duo will make history as the first family members to go forward on the show.

D’Amelios Willing To Use Family Ties To Their Advantage
In a clip shared to Twitter earlier Wednesday, “GMA” host Michael Strahan welcomed 18-year-old Hiedi and Charli to the set, and the three struck up a conversation. During their interaction, the 50-year-old mom revealed that they were filming their eponymous Hulu reality show when they received a call from “Dancing With The Stars” from their PR rep.
After her mom stated that she thought Hulu was scrapping their show, Charli added, “I thought they were joking; I didn’t think they were real.” At the end of their conversation, Strahan wanted to know if Hiedi and Charli would lobby for votes from other family members.

D’Amelios said that while they will be lobbying for votes, it will be fun to see who their families prefer. It’s already a fact that Charli might be pulling in big numbers as ET reports that she has gained over 146 million TikTok followers thanks to her viral dance clips. Additionally, the competitive dancer teamed up with former “DTWS” professional judge and returning Derek Hough earlier this year.

The couple recreated scenes from “Dirty Dancing” for Hough’s special ABC show “Step…Into the Movies with Derek and Julianne.” For Hiedi, the public figure is a former model and is now a social media influencer. The mother of two has gained the attention of fans through her appearance on “The D’Amelio family” with her other daughter, Dixie and her husband, Marc. The page has over a million views on YouTube.
ABC’s “DWTS” main channel has yet to announce which professionals will be working with D’Amelios although the show will return on September 19 with Tyra Banks as its host and Alfonso Ribeiro serving as co-host. Longtime judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman, and Hough will all return to the judge’s table.

Carrie Ann Inaba Reveals Big Changes Coming to “DWTS”

In June, judge Inaba talked about the changes that will happen during the upcoming season of “DWTS.” For starters, the dance competition will air exclusively on Disney+ instead of airing on the regular ABC channel. In a report by The Blast, it is stated that another thing that will change is the voting style of the show. Without revealing too much about how it will change, Inaba said that it will be “a little different.”

The structural change may have something to do with the criticism that “DWTS” has faced over its live voting structure over the past few seasons. During the 30th season, voting was only open during the central and eastern airtimes, preventing west coast fans from voting for their favorite artists. In regard to that, Inaba affirmed that:
“There will probably be some things that will come along with the script that I think people will like. People don’t always like change, but I think they will adapt.”
Even judge Hough shared his sentiments about “DWTS” moving from the ABC channel to Disney+. In his words, “At first, I was like, ‘What? What does that mean?!’ But within 10 seconds, I was very, very excited about it. I think that’s where a lot of things are moving in that direction.”
The professional Latin and ballroom dancer added, “Dancing with the Stars is always a trailblazer, they’re always the first to do something. So to move into this area is very brave, very brave, and I’m very excited about that, to be part of a new phase on television!”

Hough confirmed that the show will no longer include the usual two-hour commercial break. That, however, did not pose a problem as the 37-year-old saw the vacant ad space as an opportunity for growth. He explained that it translates into more opportunities for “more performances, more dancing, more creativity.” Although the 31st season of “DWTS” has yet to begin, it has already been renewed for a 32nd season.
