Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife is fighting a legal petition to allow their daughter to change her gender and name, claiming the child is being financially pressured to make this monumental decision.
According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, ex-wife of former NBA star Dwyane Wade, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, filed an objection to his petition to recognize their daughter Zaya’s gender reassignment and the issuance of a new birth certificate. As you know, Wade’s daughter is transgender and asked to be legally identified as female. The issue is that she is only 15 years old, and must get a court order and permission from her parents to make the change.
Dwyane Wade’s Ex-Wife Claims She Pushed Transgender Daughter Over Disney Deal
For starters, Siohvaughn claims her ex-husband famously “attempted to circumvent the judgment requirements of the Illinois final custody order entered on March 14, 2011. Siohvaughn said the former couple’s final custody order provided for parental consultation and that Dwyane “will discuss with and get input into the decision that affect the care, welfare, activities, health, education and religious upbringing” of both their children before any major decision is made.
Surprisingly, Siohvaughn — who is represented by celebrity attorney Mark Gross — claims, “There are various factors that the Court has to consider in determining the request to change the name and gender of the minor. The minor is fifteen and a half years old.” Adding, Dwyane “is in a position to profit from underage name and gender reassignment with various companies through contacts and marketing opportunities including but not limited to deals with Disney.”
Dwyane’s ex-wife has bluntly said the child may have been influenced by the NBA star’s chances of making money if the gender reassignment was completed.
“This matter has been widely reported in the media and there will likely be media pressure on the minor,” he wrote.
Zaya Wade’s mother wants them to force her to wait until adulthood
Siohvaughn clarified her stance by claiming that Dwyane told her directly that some of the money was behind the decision. She wrote, “I have concerns that (Dwyane) may be pressuring our son to move forward with a name and gender change to take advantage of the financial opportunity he is receiving from the company.”
He explained, “In April 2022, (Dwyane) invited me to one of his residences in Atlanta, Georgia. On this occasion, he informed me that a lot of money had been made and additional money would be made related to the name and gender issue of our child. ( Dwyane) told me that he intended to make our child very famous because of the name and gender issue and also informed me that there would be an endorsement/contract associated with it.”
Adding, “I’m asking what company has made an agreement, or is willing to make an agreement, with (Dwyane) regarding our son. Zion, who was present at the time, replied that various companies were interested and that Disney was a potential company.

Obviously, Dwyane’s ex-wife objected to the gender change and changes to Zaya’s birth certificate, asking the court to force them to wait until she was 18 to make such an important decision.
Specifically, “(Siohvaughn) argues that the minor is given the opportunity at the age of majority, which is two and a half years away, to make this monumental decision for themselves. He has strong concerns that (Dwyane) may be pressuring or incentivizing a minor with a lucrative financial opportunity to pursue this instant Petition.”
In the document, Zaya’s mother touches on the subject that she may not be fully involved with the official and legal gender change. Siohvaughn claims she is “concerned that due to the high-profile nature of this case if the minor does not fully support the requested release (and is pressured by Dwyane or the financial opportunity), the minor will be subject to further scrutiny and pressure from the media. .”
As we reported, Dwyane opened up about the situation and the reasons behind filing the legal request, saying, “Our son (at the time) came home … and said, “Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think I’m ready to live my truth and I want to be referred to as he and she and I love that you all call me Zaya.”
She added, “We’re just trying to find as much information as possible to make sure we’re giving our child the best chance to be the best he can be.”

It should be noted, the objection made the argument that Dwyane was not entitled to make this decision based on the fact that the former spouse’s custody agreement was in Illinois. Laws regarding this issue vary from state to state, and the Illinois Department of Public Health requires “an affidavit from the individual AND a declaration of gender transition to be completed, either by a licensed health care professional or a licensed mental health professional to verify that the individual has either undergoing clinically appropriate treatment for gender transition or having an intersex condition.”
In the end, Dwyane’s ex-wife asked the court to just wait until their daughter turned 18 to make this important decision as an adult. Also, clearly stating, “I am concerned that our children are being commercialized at a young age and also due to uncontrolled media exposure ie cyber bullying, statements and/or pictures taken out of context of our children, and unwanted attention being focused. on our children.”
A trial is set for December, where the judge will make a final decision.
