Dwyane Wade shared his story following his wife Gabrielle Union’s revelation about the couple’s 50/50 concept.
The power couple has won hearts around the world for their intimate bond, inspiring others to cherish their partners with the same kind of love they embody. However, the duo’s relationship dynamic has recently raised eyebrows.
After the “Cheaper By The Dozen” actress announced she and her beau split their expenses equally, the former NBA star has received backlash for allegedly failing as a homemaker, especially since she has a higher net worth. Finally tired of the speculation, the 41-year-old set the record straight.
Dwyane Wade Clarifies His Wife Gabrielle Union’s 50/50 Comments
In a recent appearance on retired NFL star Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, the former basketball player sat down with the host for a heart-to-heart talk about his domestic affairs. The episode, which was shared on Instagram, captured the two sitting comfortably by the fireplace for their candid interview.

The former athlete donned a matching white shirt, with the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee pairing his outfit with washed jeans while Wade sported dark gray pants. The pair completed their casual ensembles with sneakers, enjoying what appeared to be liquor placed on the table between them.
Diving into tea that day, the Utah Jazz co-owner noted there were various “thought pieces” floating around about his status as a man and his relationship with the Union. Jumping in, Sharpe teased the media personality about the criticism, admitting that he also slammed the Chicago native for forcing his wife to pay the bills.
However, the former Miami Heat player was not offended, stating that people misunderstand his family’s 50/50 concept. “So I understand the meaning of 50/50. 50/50 means everything in life, you get your half, and I get my half. We’re going to put this crap together and try to make 100,” the entertainer began.
“That’s how 50/50 happens. That’s not how our relationship works, is it? See everyone think 50/50; they think, ‘Hey if he gets a sandwich, you have to put 50% on it!’” the father of four continued. “That’s not how it works.”
According to Wade, in the couple’s household, the 50/50 concept means that Union pays one hundred percent of his personal responsibilities, such as meeting the needs of his parents and siblings. Likewise, the 3-time NBA champion does the same with his responsibilities. However, as a married couple, they both share their house and bills.
Recalling what led to the 50/50 rule, the 41-year-old said, “We made the decision together because I think I said one time when we were in Miami, I said something about my house that I paid for. The wife looked at me, and she was like, ‘You’re not going to say that to me again when it’s something we share.’”
“So my wife was like, ‘when we move to LA, I’m getting half of it. You’re not going to say my house anymore,'” explained Wade. “In our life, our house, 50/50, we bought it together. Son our girl, whatever happens with our daughter, we share 50/50.”
Wade insists he doesn’t mind footing the bill, especially when the family goes on luxury trips. However, the father of four stated that he loves his wife for being “a working woman,” “a boss,” and “an independent woman,” who willingly contributes to their expenses.
Gabrielle Union Opens Up About Her Family’s Financial Situation & The 50/50 Concept
Weeks before her husband came clean about their marital affairs, the “Deliver Us from Eva” star made headlines for sharing how she and Wade handle their finances on a 50/50 basis. Opening up about the couple’s equality system, the 50-year-old explained during an appearance on Bloomberg’s Idea Generation that the pair share their expenses as a team.
“It’s weird to say I’m the head of the house because, in this household, we split everything 50/50,” said the Hollywood sensation. According to the Black Reel Award winner, the couple feels responsible for their large family, given their successful careers, and tries to provide for their relatives.
“But in other households that each of us has to support, it puts this – there’s always this gorilla behind you – like, “You better work, you better work, you better work – are you going to sleep? Someone might not eat!” the mother of one explained, noting that her responsibilities often weighed on her mind.

Union admits to feeling anxious about her wealth despite her and her husband’s collective success. “I feel like I just have more responsibility for my money,” laments the TV personality. “So, I was nervous, ‘Oh my God, the movie didn’t open; what does it mean? Will I have enough to hold everyone?’”
