Wade recently released a lengthy Instagram statement to address the Funches-Wade court filing. In the statement, the retired NBA star said he was not surprised by his “wife’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity” and that he was trying to “drag [his] name through the mud.”
She also wrote, “I am so disappointed that she continues to find ways to focus on herself and HER needs, without considering her children. I have given her the opportunity to contact Zaya’s teachers, doctors and therapists over the years and also meet her friends, so she can gain her own understanding of what our son needs for his LIFE!”
The 40-year-old Wade also claimed that the 41-year-old Funches-Wade was an “absentee parent” who refused to attend a single “recital, graduation, school dance, play date, practice, parent-teacher conference etc.” but professed to be “a good Christian mother.”

The former Miami Heat player also insisted that he and his wife, Gabrielle Union, never forced “Zaya or any [their] children to do anything against their will, let alone force an identity on them.” Wade also stated that this time, he will not “sit down [his] hand” because Funches-Wade falsely accused him.
Wade said, “The road has run out of real estate. My lawyer will be in touch.” The former basketball player gained full custody of his children with Funches-Wade in 2011 when he divorced their mother. In court documents obtained exclusively by ExplosionFunches-Wade wrote, “I have that concern [Dwyane] maybe pressure our son to go ahead… to take advantage of the financial opportunities he receives from the company.”
The petition is to legally change Zaya’s name from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. In its filing per ExplosionWade claimed that he had the legal right to make such a decision on Zaya’s behalf and said he only informed Funches-Wade “as a courtesy.”
Funches-Wade has been fighting with her ex-husband for two years after Zaya revealed that she is transgender. Now the teenager has won modeling contracts with major brands such as Dove and Tiffany and attends Fashion Week. According to Funches-Wade, Zaya is also in talks with Disney for a film project.
