Following a bitter court battle between Dwyane Wade and his ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, the court has finally issued a legal name change and gender change for their daughter, Zaya.
Last November, Zaya’s mother contested a legal petition by Wade to allow their daughter to officially change her name and gender. In court documents obtained by ExplosionSiohvaughn claims that their son was financially pressured to make the decision.

Zaya Wade Releases Legal Name And Gender Change
Friday in Los Angeles, a judge granted Dwyane Wade’s legal petition to change the name and gender of daughter Zaya after objections from his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade.
Court documents obtained by Explosion states that “Petition for Recognition of Gender Change and Issuance of New Birth Certificate filed by Zion Malachi Airamis Wade, by and through gal, Dwyane T. Wade, Jr. on 08/22/2022 Partially Granted.”
It continued that “Decree signed and filed. Petitioner’s name changed from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. Petitioner’s gender changed from male to female.”
According to court documents, Zaya will also be issued a new birth certificate stating her new name and gender.
Zaya’s Mother Initially Opposes the Petition

Last year, in November, Explosion exclusively reported that Zaya’s mother is trying to fight the legal petition, accusing her ex-husband of trying to exploit her transgender daughter.
He argued for parental consultation, saying that Dwyane “will discuss with and obtain input into major decisions affecting the care, welfare, activities, health, education and religious upbringing” of their children before any major life-changing decisions are made. .
He further claimed that “there are several factors that the Court needs to consider in determining the request to change the name and gender of the minor. The minor is fifteen and a half years old.”
The outraged mother of two also added that Dwyane “is in a position to profit from underage names and gender reassignments with various companies through relationships and marketing opportunities including but not limited to deals with Disney.”
Wade later denied all of his ex-wife’s claims in an Instagram post, slamming her for trying to discredit him.

Following Wade’s ex-wife Siohvaughn’s claims that he tried to exploit Zaya, the former NBA pro took to Instagram to call her out, calling the allegations “Dangerous.”
Wade wrote in his lengthy statement, “While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her relentless attempt to drag my name through the mud, I am deeply disappointed that she continues to seek [sic] how to focus on himself and HIS needs without considering his children.”
She went on to add that she has, “given her the opportunity to contact Zaya’s teachers, doctors and therapists over the years and also meet her friends, so she can get her own understanding of what our son needs for his LIFE!”
The 40-year-old is holding nothing back as he considers his ex-wife an “absentee parent” due to her refusal to attend “recitals, graduations, school dances, play dates, practices, parent-teacher conferences etc. ,” yet calls herself a “good Christian mother.”
The former Miami Heat player also insisted that he and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, never pressured “Zaya or any [their] children to do anything against their will, let alone force an identity on them.” He stated that this time, he would not “sit down [his] hand” because Siohvaughn falsely accused him by saying that, “The road has run out of real estate. My lawyer will be in touch.”
Dwyane Wade Praises His Daughter

The former basketball player, who gained full custody of his children with Siohvaughn in 2011 following their divorce, took time to praise his daughter for her intelligence and good grades. Wade made sure to highlight Zaya’s “4.0 GPA” and that she was in the “honors class”.
The proud dad talked about how Zaya managed to maintain her good grades “while navigating all this unsolicited and dangerous attention and debate about her gender and sexuality from those who were committed to not hearing her, much less knowing her!”
