Dwyane Wade’s Decision To Leave Florida Was Inspired By His Family

Dwyane Wade has been open about how his family influenced his decision to change their living arrangements.

The basketball legend, whose daughter Zaya came out as transgender in 2020, shared that her family moved from Florida to avoid dealing with its restrictive policies that violate LGBTQ rights. The NBA champion welcomed the teenager with his first wife — and high school sweetheart — Siohvaughn Funches in 2007.

Wade continues to prove that he deserves the “Daddy of the Year” award for making decisions that make his family happier. In a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLEthe doting dad was spotted talking to Rachel Nichols for Thursday’s episode of his show, “Headliners.”

In response to the veteran reporter’s question about the Florida politician who actively opposes LGBTQ rights while claiming to be a fan, the former Miami Heat player stated:

“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state. A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”

The retired athlete insists that while “having Wade County is great,” it doesn’t mean anything because his family “wouldn’t be accepted or feel comfortable there.” Just last week, the board of education banned Florida public school educators for all grade levels from teaching their students about sexual orientation and gender identity.

So Wade’s move from the state to protect his daughter, whose petition to legally change her name and gender was approved this year, could not have come at a better time.

In addition to leaving the state he calls home, the father-of-one also supported his baby girl as she made her runway debut alongside wife Gabrielle Union. The couple, who couldn’t hide their pride, were front and center at Miu Miu’s fall/winter show during Paris Fashion Week 2023 last month.

According to The Blast, Zaya achieved the feat in a short olive green dress, matching jacket and brown handbag. The up-and-coming model confidently moves from one end of the catwalk to the other, as seen in a clip shared in a joint Instagram post from her father and stepmother.

The video quickly became a topic of discussion, with several celebrities, including Viola Davis and Gigi Hadid, putting sweet emojis in the comments section. Fans also reacted when someone said, “Thank you both so much for supporting and loving your daughter. I’m very proud to see it too!”

A second person claimed, “Every child deserves this kind of unconditional love and support,” and a third admitted, “If “we ARE proud parents” were people? It would be the Union-Wade Family. Zaya is beautiful and kill the track.”

Regarding Zaya’s legal name and gender change, The Blast confirmed that the document filed last August, was signed in February 2023. According to the papers obtained:

“Petition for Recognition of Child Sex Change and Issuance of New Birth Certificate filed by Zion Malachi Airamis Wade, by and through gal, Dwyane T. Wade, Jr. on 22/08/2022 Partially Granted.”

“Decree signed and filed. Petitioner’s name changed from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. The gender of the Petitioner was changed from male to female,” he continued.

While the news certainly lifted the family’s spirits, it was not an easy feat to achieve as the Funches initially filed objections to the name and gender change. Her filing noted the possibility that her ex-husband “may have pressured” their son to undergo the process.

She argued that Wade violated parental consultation rules, stating that he “shall consult with and obtain input into major decisions” affecting their children’s “care, welfare, activities, health, education and religious upbringing” before such decisions are finalized.

The 41-year-old also stated that the court’s decision to grant the request “to change the minor’s name and gender” depends on “various factors,” stating, “The minor is fifteen and a half years old. ” Funches further states:

“[Wade] is positioned to profit from minors’ name and gender reassignment with various companies through relationships and marketing opportunities including but not limited to deals with Disney.”

Wade has since denied his ex-wife’s claims, calling them “harmful” in a social media post.
