Meet Eileen Gu’s Mother, Yan Gu
Yan Gu is Eileen’s mother who immigrated from China 30 years earlier to pursue higher education. He is a former ski instructor at a resort near Lake Tahoe. At the age of 3, Yan took his daughter skiing for the first time. They live a few hours from the slopes around Lake Tahoe.
Skiing becomes more than a weekend pursuit. Yan Gu also spent several years as a part-time ski instructor at Northstar and bought a condo nearby.
Yan always takes care of her and her daughter’s position on social media. He told Chinese news media in 2015 that Eileen was sponsored by the Beijing Nanshan ski resort (her current biography with the international ski federation lists it as her home resort) and that they were friends with Lu Jian, the resort’s founder and a pioneer in the nascent Chinese ski industry.
