Elderly Holocaust survivor in wheelchair kidnapped by Hamas: Blinken

An elderly Holocaust survivor in a wheelchair was among more than 100 people taken hostage by the Palestinian terror group Hamas this weekend, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday.

The Palestinian attack on Israel is the worst in 50 years – since the Yom Kippur War in 1973 – and also very different, Blinken told ABC News’ This Week.

“There is a fundamental difference. That [1973 conflict] is a war of state to state, country to country, army to army,” said Blinken. “This was a massive terrorist attack that shot dead Israeli civilians in their cities, in their homes.”

Blinken then appeared to reference a video circulating online of an elderly woman in a wheelchair being carried by Hamas gunmen in southern Israel.

“As we can see graphically, literally dragging people across the border with Gaza, including Holocaust survivors in wheelchairs, women and children,” said Blinken.

“So, you can imagine the effect on the whole of Israel, and the world should be revolted by what it sees,” he added.

Blinken also confirmed Sunday that the Biden administration believes many Americans have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Israel.

“Yes, we have reports that several Americans were killed. We’re working overtime to confirm it,” Blinken told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“At the same time, there are reports of missing Americans, and again, we are working to confirm those reports,” he said.

Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer confirmed that Americans were among “scores” of hostages taken by Hamas, according to an interview with CNN on Sunday.

Dermer declined to estimate the number of Americans taken captive but said the hostages included women, children and the elderly.

The Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas launched a surprise attack and barrage of rockets into Israel coupled with ground attacks Saturday, killing more than 600 Israelis and injuring more than 2,100 others.

At least 100 people have been taken hostage, and the death toll is expected to rise, officials said.

Hamas terrorists are seen taking hostages from Israel and parading them through the streets in a gruesome video that has been shared on social media.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Saturday that “we are at war” and promised Hamas would pay “an unprecedented price.”

Gaza health officials reported at least 300 Palestinians killed with 2,200 injured.
