Elizabeth Olsen Advises Prospective Marvel Stars Not To Sign Multi-Movie Deals

Elizabeth Olsen has revealed that she is not a fan of multiple film deals. The actress, best known for her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the MCU, recently advised actors looking to join the franchise not to sign multi-film deals.

Olsen believes that opting for a one-film deal will give the actor creative control over the character for subsequent installments.

He previously discussed his frustration with his multi-film deal with the MCU, which ended last year after he starred in “Doctor Strange 2.”

‘Give Them A Movie’

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Olsen, who has been a mainstay in the MCU for the past few years, offered advice to actors interested in joining the franchise one day.

He shared that while it is often customary for actors to sign multi-film deals, it is advisable not to do so, and instead they should stick to signing up for just one film initially.

“I said, give them just one [movie],” Olsen said. He added, “I think that way, you have more control.”

As for why she felt that should happen, Olsen noted that it’s hard to know from the start if an actor will enjoy playing a character more than once. However, if they do and want to reprise their roles, they will have more “creative control.”

He went on to say, ‘”If you, say, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is the most fun I’ve ever had, and I love this character so much, I want to do it again,’ you now have more creative control to the following.'”

Elizabeth Olsen Is Not Satisfied With Her MCU Multi-Movie Deal

Olsen’s advice seems to be inspired by her own personal experience with the MCU as Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch.

When the actor joins the franchise, he is signed to a multi-film deal and is contractually required to play the role multiple times, either as a feature or in his own complete film/series project.

Despite earning a lot of money for the iconic role, Olsen said in an interview with New York Times that it came with compromises he hadn’t initially anticipated.

“It took me away from the physical ability to do certain jobs that I thought were more in line with what I enjoyed as an audience member,” Olsen revealed in 2022.

He later added that his confession came from an honest place, saying, “This is me at my most honest.”

One of the gigs the “Avengers: End Game” star had to pass up was a role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ 2015 comedy, “The Lobster.”

Although Olsen hid further details, it should be noted that the film was later nominated for an Oscar, which would show the actress in a different light than the witch character she is best known for.

Being stuck in the MCU while watching a project he’s interested in missing out on ultimately leads to creeping frustration.

“I started to feel frustrated,” he said NYT. “I had this job security, but I lost this part that I felt was more a part of me. And the more I got away from it, the less I was considered for it.”

Olsen’s deal with the MCU ended after her role in “Doctor Strange 2,” in which she starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, who played the title character.

She has moved on to playing other independent roles, including starring as Candy Montgomery in the HBO Max crime drama “Love & Death.”

Talk with Diversity last month, the actress revealed that she is currently not doing any work with the MCU and has no plans to do so anytime soon.

And when asked if she missed playing Scarlet Witch, Olsen said, “I don’t miss it. I only did it two years in a row. I think the break is good for me.”

He added, “I have to develop another character. It’s important to me. I am grateful for this show [‘Love & Death’] because it came at a great time — after playing Wanda for two years straight, and then I got to talk about it for another year. So it’s nice to have something else to focus on and highlight.”
