Elon Musk derailed Ukraine counteroffensive, shut off Starlink network to prevent ‘mini-Pearl Harbor,’ book claims

Elon Musk thwarted a Ukrainian submarine drone attack on a Russian naval fleet last year by shutting down the Starlink satellite internet network near the coast of Crimea to prevent a “mini Pearl Harbor,” the billionaire’s biography claims.

Musk, 52, thought the Kremlin would respond to the attack with nuclear weapons — a fear based on his conversations with senior Russian officials, according to “Elon Musk” quote Walter Isaacson, CNN reported Thursday.

As Ukrainian submarine drones carrying bombs approached the ship, they “lost contact and drifted harmlessly ashore,” Isaacson wrote, according to the network.

Ukrainian officials then begged the SpaceX founder to revive his satellite internet constellation, the book reportedly said.

The book will be out next week.

Isaacson reportedly wrote that Musk spoke with national security adviser Jake Sullivan, the chairman of the joint chiefs, Gen. Mark Milley, and the Russian ambassador to the US to address concerns from Washington to Moscow..

Musk had agreed to provide Ukraine with a Starlink satellite terminal after Russia jammed the country’s communications system before it invaded the former Soviet territory in February 2022, but began to have an “inherent fear” of increasing bloodshed by contributing to a counterattack, according to the book.

“How am I doing in this war?” Musk reportedly asked Isaacson. “Starlink is not meant to be involved in war. It’s so people can watch Netflix and relax and go online to go to school and do good things in peace, not drone strikes.”

In October 2022, Musk said he would no longer pay for his Starlink satellite internet service to operate in Ukraine after officials slammed his controversial proposal that Ukraine end the war by ceding Crimea to Russia and remain neutral, but never followed through on his threat.

He has presented his peace settlement as a poll on his newly acquired Twitter platform – now rebranded as X – which has drawn praise from the Kremlin and derision from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who created his own Twitter poll asking users if they were more pro-Russian.
