Elon Musk Fires Back At Stephen King’s Blue Twitter Checkmark Criticism

Billionaire Elon Musk is already finding that his new acquisition of Twitter is not going as well as he had hoped.

Tesla’s CEO is looking to make changes to the social media platform that many have resisted. Many users rely on the blue Twitter check mark to verify which accounts are authentic and which are not.

However, Musk’s plan to charge users $20 dollars to keep their blue Twitter verification checkmark has many seeing red, including “The Stand” author Stephen King.

Stephen King ‘Disappears Like Enron’ If Elon Musk Follows His $20 Blue Twitter Checkmark Plan

$20 a month to keep my blue check? Screw that, they should pay me. If that starts, I’ll go like Enron.

On Monday, the “Carrie” author took to Twitter to criticize Musk’s new plan to attract more revenue for the social media company. “$20 a month to keep my blue check? F— that, they should pay me,” he said tweeted. “If that starts, I’m going to go like Enron.”

It’s not the money, it’s the main thing.

“That’s a bit strange. You can afford it,” said one user. However, King explained, “It’s not the money, it’s the main thing.”

I will explain the rationale in a longer form before this is implemented. It’s the only way to defeat bots & trolls.

The tweet apparently caught the attention of Musk, who commented on King’s post, asking, “We’ve got to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?”

He then followed it up, adding, “I will explain the rationale in a longer form before this is implemented. It’s the only way to defeat bots & trolls.”

Elon Musk has long criticized the number of bots and spam accounts on the Twitter platform. It is one of the reasons that the $44 billion dollar deal, first announced in April, took so long to complete. The SpaceX CEO tweeted that the deal was “on hold” several times and publicly asserted that the number of bots and spam accounts was higher than the 5% Twitter CEO had previously claimed.

So, I have lost almost 6000 followers in the last three days. Is it because the new twit owner… or just not posting enough cute animal videos lately? 🐷 🤔 https://t.co/28t1nNAiV0

It seems Musk is already doing his best to crack down on the number of bot and spam accounts, as many users have noticed a sharp drop in Twitter followers over the past few days. “Star Wars” alum Mark Hamill was one of the first to comment on the sudden drop in followers, tweeting, “So I’ve lost almost 6000 followers in the last three days. Is it because of the new twit owner… or not posting enough cute animal videos lately?”

Musk’s Twitter Takeover Raises Concerns About Hate Speech

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter sparked a surge in the use of the N-word on the social media platform.

A social media research group told The Washington Post that slur use has increased by nearly 500%. https://t.co/49CJVwuyIe

Although Musk has stated several times that he wants Twitter to be a bastion of “free speech,” a social media research group told The Washington Post that use of the N-word has increased nearly 500% since Elon Musk took over Twitter.

I don’t know Elon Musk and, tbh, I don’t care who owns twitter. But I will say that if this is true, I hope he and his people take this seriously because this is scary AF. Many unqualified people say hate speech is free speech. https://t.co/Sy0jvXIBnC

— LeBron James (@KingJames) October 29, 2022

The tweet even caught the attention of LeBron James, who tweeted, “I don’t know Elon Musk and, tbh, I don’t care who owns Twitter. But I will say that if this is true, I hope he and his people take this seriously because this is scary AF. So many undeserving people say hate speech is free speech.”

Almost all of these accounts are fake. We’ve taken action to ban users involved in this trolling campaign — and will continue to work to address this in the coming days to make Twitter safe and friendly for everyone. https://t.co/1hUnb1WYPZ

Musk responded to James’ post with a Twitter thread from Twitter’s Head of Safety & Security, Yoel Roth, who tweeted, “Almost all of these accounts are not authentic. We have taken action to ban users involved in this trolling campaign — and will continue to work to address this in the coming days to make Twitter safe and friendly for everyone.”
