Billionaire Elon Musk really wants users to pay for that blue Twitter verification checkmark, one way or another.
While many consumers feel that the blue verification check mark is a way to verify legitimate users, especially when it comes to celebrities and official accounts, Tesla’s CEO wants consumers to shell out some money to get the blue check mark.
On Monday, horror guru Stephen King refused to pay $20 to keep his blue check mark. The high price point of $240 per year drew a lot of criticism, prompting Musk to consider dropping the price to $96 per year, with some added benefits.
Elon Musk Will Replace Twitter’s ‘Bullsh*t’ Checkmark System With $8 Payment Plan
Twitter’s current lord & peasant system of who has or doesn’t have a blue tick is bullshit.
Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.

On Tuesday afternoon, it appears that SpaceX’s CEO decided to respond to criticism of the current model after Stephen King’s tweet started trending.
“Twitter’s current lord & peasant system of who has or doesn’t have a blue tick is bullshit,” Musk tweeted. “Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.”
You will also get:– Priority in replies, mentions & searches, which is important to beat spam/scams– Ability to post long videos & audios– Half as many ads

“Prices are adjusted by country in proportion to purchasing power parity,” he added before giving users a list of “benefits” they would get if they bought the blue tick. These additional benefits include priority in replies, mentions and search results, which he described as “essential” to defeating spam and fraudulent accounts.
Users with a blue checkmark will also see half as many ads as people who don’t pay the $8 per month fee. Pay-to-play users will also have the ability to stream longer video clips and audio files, although the length of those files has yet to be revealed.
This will also give Twitter a revenue stream to reward content creators

In other comments, Musk said that there would be a “paywall bypass for publishers who are willing to work with us,” though he failed to reveal details of the arrangement. He defended his Twitter checkmark subscription model saying that the $8 a month fee would “give Twitter a revenue stream to reward content creators.”

In a follow-up to his initial tweet, Musk later shared a photo of himself posing at Heidi Klum’s 2022 Halloween party in his costume, with the words, “ALL FOR $8 YESSSS!!!” written on the photo. His mother, Maye Musk, who attended the party with him, was apparently absent.
Critics Hit Back at Musk’s Twitter Checkmark Plan: ‘Wow You Really Don’t Understand Social Media’
Wow. You really don’t understand social media.
The point of a blue check is to verify that the person is who they say they are and that they are a legitimate authority in their field.
Not that they have $96 a year.
— Steve Hofstetter (@SteveHofstetter) November 1, 2022
While the new program has been officially announced, many have expressed criticism of Elon Musk and his plan to create a new revenue stream for Twitter by monetizing its blue verification checkmark.
Comedian Steve Hofstetter was one of the first to criticize the show by explaining why the blue confirmation check was implemented in the first place. “Wow. You really don’t understand social media,” he said commenting on Musk’s prefix tweets. “The point of the blue check is to verify that the person is who they say they are and that they are a legitimate authority in their field. It’s not like they happen to have $96 a year.”

Outlets TechCrunch also agree that the monetization of the blue check mark only creates the possibility of misinformation being spread on the platform. “Musk and his friends see this plan as a way to get people to actually give Twitter money,” TechCrunch reported. “But by monetizing a symbol that currently has value, they will ultimately remove all of that existing value.”
Despite Musk’s tweet, no other information has been revealed about when Twitter plans to start charging for those blue verification checks or what other benefits users will actually receive.
