Emiway Bantai was born on 13 November 1995 (age 23 years; as in 2018) in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. He was born as Bilal Shaikh in a middle class orthodox Muslim family. His family has roots in Karnataka. Later, he used the stage name “Emiway,” which is a combination of the names of Eminem and Lil Wayne, that is, Emi from Eminem and Way from Wayne. He did his schooling from LHS, Mumbai. Emiway excelled in his studies until 10th grade but shifted his focus towards rapping when he reached 11th grade. He failed in 12th standard and suffered from depression. It took a lot of effort for him to learn hip-hop music.

Bantai initially started making rap videos for fun, but after receiving an overwhelming response, he began to take rap seriously.

Emiway made his debut with “Glint Lock” ft. Ask in 2013.
In his early days as a rapper, he struggled and worked as an assistant at the ‘Hard Rock Cafe’ to earn money. He did not take any financial support from his family to make rap music. At first, Bantai rapped only in English, but his father advised him to rap in Hindi so that Indians could understand it. In 2014, Emiway did his first Hindi rap “Aur Bantai.” The rap was an instant hit.
Before becoming famous, Bantai also auditioned for India’s popular reality show – India’s Got Talent.
In 2016, he received the Radio City Freedom Award in ‘Hard Rock Cafe.’ It just so happened that the cafe was the same place where he had worked as an assistant before.
In 2017, Emiway received his breakthrough with the song “#Sadak,” a collaboration with rapper Raftaar. In 2018, he entered into a feud with Raftaar. It all started when Raftaar while surveying Emiway said that rappers can’t seem to get money, after which Emiway released his diss song titled “Samajh Mein Aaya Kya,” to which Raftaar responded with “Sheikh Chilli.” It didn’t end there as Emiway once again released a song titled “Giraftaar,” as his response.

In 2019, Bantai stepped into Bollywood with “Asli Hip-Hop” from Zoya Akhtar’s film “Gully Boy.” He not only rapped in the song but also featured in the video of the song.
