Emma Stone Talks ‘No Shame About Her Body’ While Filming Sex Scenes In ‘Poor Things’

Actress Emma Stone reportedly has no qualms about filming sex scenes in “Poor Things,” her latest film. This sci-fi black comedy, based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, marks his reunion with Director Yorgos Lanthimos since 2018’s “The Favourite.” The story follows Bella (played by Stone), a resurrected Victorian woman who seeks independence from her guardians, depicted by Hollywood veteran Willem Dafoe.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos recently shared that Emma Stone showed no hesitation during the filming of a sex scene in their new movie, “Poor Things.” The sci-fi black comedy adapted from Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name marks the reunion of Lanthimos and Stone after their 2018 collaboration on “The Favourite.”

The story revolves around Bella (played by Stone), a young Victorian woman who is resurrected after her death and then seeks independence by escaping from her guardian, portrayed by Willem Dafoe.

Lanthimos, ahead of the film’s premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, emphasized the importance of Stone being comfortable during the sex scenes in “Poor Things,” which play a key role in the source material.

During a press conference at the Venice film festival, Lanthimos emphasized that “sex is intrinsic to the novel” and an important element in depicting the character’s freedom. He emphasized the need to avoid prudery, because it would be “betraying the main character.”

“It was very important for me not to make a film that would be prudish, because it would betray the main character completely. So we have to be sure Emma doesn’t have to be ashamed of her body, nudity [and] involved in the scene and he understood it immediately,” he shared, per Diversity.

Lanthimos praised Stone’s confidence and understanding of the character’s needs, citing their strong working relationship built over four films.

He explained, “The interesting thing about me and Emma is that we’ve done four films together; there is a shorthand and we can communicate without having to explain or talk too much about things.” Lanthimos added, “As soon as I started saying something about sex, she’d say: ‘Yeah,’ of course, it’s Bella. We will do what we have to do.”

Additionally, the director of “The Lobster” mentioned hiring an intimacy coordinator for “Poor Things,” which he believes eases the process for everyone involved, emphasizing their importance in the industry.
