Bill was one of five children born to Clifford Musselman and Bertha Combs. Despite his father’s lack of athletic experience, Bill began playing basketball, football and baseball at a young age. When her mother married James Miller, she moved in with him. Despite being a stepfather, James raised Bill as his own son and was instrumental in helping him advance his athletic career.
Bill attended Wooster High School, where he graduated in 1958 as the school’s second all-time leading scorer. He went on to play college basketball at Wittenberg College.
