Arrested felon Danelo Cavalcante told police he survived for nearly two weeks on stolen watermelons – and that officers scouring the heavy Pennsylvania bush for him got so close, they nearly ran over him three times.
The 34-year-old convicted killer was “brutally honest” after he was arrested Wednesday morning, sharing how he buried his feces to avoid detection, US Marshal Robert Clark told NewsNation.
“He once said three times law enforcement officers almost stepped on him. They were about seven to eight yards away from him,” Clark said.
Cavalcante, who escaped from the Chester County Jail on Aug. 31, had just been sentenced to life in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in front of their two young children in 2021.
Prosecutors are expected to bring additional charges for the crimes he committed during his 14 days on the run.

“We believe he is very honest. He explained things like hiding his poop under leaves so we couldn’t spot it,” Clark said.
When asked how he changed his appearance while on the lam, Cavalcante – who had been clean-shaven overnight – said the backpack he stole contained a razor.
Cavalcante also told police that, if he wasn’t caught, he soon planned to use a firearm he stole from someone’s garage to flee the country.
He was finally found Wednesday morning by a police dog named Yoda.
“He intended to hijack someone’s car in the community and head north to Canada, or either or try to get back to Puerto Rico. He said he would do it in the next 24 hours. And that’s why he kept the gun. He knew he needed a weapon to get the vehicle,” Clark said.
Cavalcante was finally caught on Wednesday morning, when he tried to escape from a Belgian Malinois K-9 named Yoda, which sank its teeth into the killer and pinned him to the ground, leaving him covered in blood.
