Esther Rantzen was born on June 22, 1940, to Katherine Flora (née Leverson, 1911-2005) and Henry Barnato Rantzen (1902-1992). She is from Berkhamsted in the English county of Hertfordshire. Her parents are Jewish. Priscilla N. Taylor, her younger sister, was her only sibling.
Her great-great-grandfather immigrated to Britain in the late 1850s and settled in Spitalfields as a cap maker. Her great-grandfather relocated to a more comfortable neighborhood with the assistance of his brother-in-law, diamond merchant Barney Barnato (born Barnett Isaacs), who had become extremely wealthy in South Africa.
She attended Buckley Country Day School in New York and graduated in 1950. Esther then attended North London Collegiate School in Edgware, North London, an all-girls independent school. She also studied English at Oxford’s Somerville College.
