Nanjiani shared his own thoughts on the criticism of the Marvel franchise by veteran Hollywood directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

The pair have criticized the multi-billion dollar franchise, with Scorsese comparing Marvel movies to theme parks and Tarantino saying Marvel actors aren’t movie stars.

As for their opinions, the “Eternals” actor insists that both directors have “earned” the right to criticize Marvel movies, even if he doesn’t agree with them.

The actor said, per Insider“I obviously love the movies Tarantino makes or Scorsese makes, and I may not agree with Scorsese’s opinion on superhero movies, but I mean, who else gets the right to have an opinion?”

Both Scorsese and Tarantino have made iconic films over the years that have garnered multiple awards, which, in Nanjiani’s opinion, gives both the right to speak freely.

He added: “If Scorsese hasn’t earned the right to have an opinion about a movie, then none of us should have an opinion about a movie.”

Martin Scorsese’s Criticism Of Marvel Movies

In October 2019, Scorsese boldly criticized Marvel Films in an interview with Empire Magazine.

“I didn’t see them,” he said at the time, “I’m Cuban, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is a theme park.”

Doubling down on his statement, the veteran director said that Marvel films fail to “convey an emotional, psychological experience to another human being.”

Later that same month, Scorsese again slammed Marvel movies for turning “theater” into “amusement park.”

He added, via Insider, “That’s all well and good but don’t invade everything in that sense….That’s not my type, but no. It creates another kind of audience that thinks cinema is that.”

What Quentin Tarantino Says About Marvel Movies

Quentin’s remarks about Marvel movies are more focused on the actors who play superheroes.

“Part of the Marvelization of Hollywood is that you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” the director said during an appearance on the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast, per Insider. “But they are not movie stars. Captain America is the star. Thor is the star.”

He also expressed his skepticism at the time about Hollywood’s recent preoccupation with producing superhero films. He went on to say that having more alternatives would make watching movies better.

Tarantino said, “There is an aspect that if this [Marvel] movies would come out when I was in my 20s, I was really happy and really loved them. I mean, they weren’t the only movies made. They will be that movie among other movies. But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not that excited about them.”

Samuel L. Jackson And Simu Liu Speak Out Against The Criticism

In response to Scorsese and Tarantino’s comments about Marvel movies, Hollywood stars such as Samuel L. Jackson and Simu Liu shared their views.

Liu, who starred in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” took to Twitter to say directors like Tarantino and Scorsese wouldn’t let him star in a “$400 million plus movie.”

He also said that the two “can’t turn their noses at me or anybody,” though he respects their achievements in the film industry.

On the other hand, Jackson stated that the acting ability of the Marvel actors is what really draws people to the cinema.

He said during an interview with “The View”: “It takes an actor to be certain characters, and the star of a movie is always, what, a donkey in the seat? What are we talking about?”
