Ex-chemistry student accused of injecting opioid under neighbor’s door used university lab to mix dangerous toxins

He’s a lab rat.

The Florida chemist accused of injecting opioids under his neighbor’s front door — because of a noisy toilet seat — used a lab at his university to carefully mix the dangerous toxins, according to court papers obtained by The Post.

Xuming Li, 36, used “a laboratory on the University of South Florida campus to mix and load syringes of liquid multiple times with the intent to injure condominium residents,” a violation of contract filing by the building’s owners’ association states.

Li is a Ph.D. chemistry student at the university through summer 2023, USF confirmed to WFLA.

The chemist was arrested on June 27 after his neighbour, Umar Abdullah, caught him on a hidden camera bending over and spraying a clear liquid into a gap in the door frame.

Hazmat testing revealed the “liquid chemical agent” contained a combination of methadone and hydrocodone – both opioid pain medications.

News of the shocking poisoning sent other residents of Oxford Place at Tampa Palms into a panic, according to the suit, which seeks to have Li and his co-owner’s roommate removed from the complex.

“The actions by the defendant have escalated to the point where residents and owners feel unsafe in their properties and condominiums,” the filing said.

In a statement, the University of South Florida said, “The safety and well-being of the USF community is our top priority. The USF Chemistry Department has several safeguards in place to ensure that all chemicals and other materials owned by the university for teaching and research purposes are properly accounted for and used.

The USF chemistry lab does not house chemicals classified as Schedule II controlled substances, which include hydrocodone and methadone.”

Abdullah told local channel WFLA that he, his pregnant wife, and their daughter moved into the complex directly above Li in June 2022.

Li soon began sending angry texts to her new neighbor, complaining that she was losing sleep over the sound of the toilet seat clinking.

Not long after, the family suddenly began experiencing unexplained bouts of nausea and dizziness.

“I saw my daughter,” said Abdullah. “His eyes were full of tears. He wasn’t crying, but his eyes were full of tears.”

A family friend first noticed the chemical smell while picking up a package for them while they were away on vacation.

Abdullah then also noticed the smell and suspected there was a problem with his water heater.

However, the stench persisted even after he replaced the appliance and had the air ducts and vents cleaned.

Desperate for a resolution, she called the fire department, who ran tests but found nothing wrong.

“I never thought after this that it wasn’t,” said Abdullah. “I just imagined this. No.”

He eventually notices a small crack in his door and begins to suspect his disgruntled neighbor.

After falling ill again, he installed a hidden camera outside his door and was shocked to see Li bend down and empty a syringe under his front door.

“We’re shaking,” Abdullah told WFLA. “We couldn’t imagine that he would come and do something.”

He immediately vacated the condo and called the police, who arrested Li and slapped him with felonies including possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Li was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 5.

The owner’s association’s efforts to evict Li and his roommate are still ongoing.
