Ex-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy gets ‘America First’ primary challenger

October Rep. Kevin McCarthy began with his historic ouster as speaker of the House.

It ended with a challenge from a self-proclaimed Donald Trump aide who wants to take the veteran lawmaker out of Congress.

Sports trading card dealer David Giglio announced his campaign for the GOP nomination in California’s 20th District on Monday by praising the eight Republicans who snatched the gavel from McCarthy Oct. 3.

“After years of being sold out to special interests, the people of the Central Valley deserve an America First Republican who is fighting for them in Washington and working with President Donald Trump to WAGE WAR against the corrupt party union!” Giglio said in a statement.

Connecticut-born Giglio is the owner of CaliCards & More in Clovis, a Fresno suburb about 120 miles north of McCarthy’s old home in Bakersfield, according to his campaign biography.

McCarthy (R-Calif.), 58, has represented the ruby-red district since 2007, 16 years in which he continued to climb the House GOP leadership ladder before becoming speaker in January.

“Kevin McCarthy was ousted as Speaker by 8 brave members of his party for failing to keep his promises and surrendering to Joe Biden and the radical Democrats. Kevin McCarthy must be defeated,” Giglio’s announcement continued.

McCarthy was ousted when a handful of Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) voted with 208 Democrats to give him the boot.

Gaetz and company claim to have been disappointed by McCarthy’s decision to propose a stopgap measure to avoid a partial government shutdown on September 30. However, McCarthy has insisted personal animosity from Gaetz played a role.

The Californian is the first House speaker in US history to be officially ousted through a motion to vacate the seat, which left the lower chamber paralyzed for 22 days before a new leader was elected.

Finally Mike Johnson of Louisiana was voted in as speaker Oct. 25 — after three other Republican speaker nominees withdrew their nominations.

Shortly after his fall, McCarthy declared his intention to remain in Congress and run for re-election, though did not seek to reclaim the gavel.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative that we replace career politicians and elect America First Republicans who will secure the southern border, end the government’s use of guns, drain the broken swamp, and destroy Washington forever,” Giglio said Monday.

The McCarthy campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The former speaker is widely regarded as a fundraiser for Republican House candidates.

Given that fundraising prowess and McCarthy’s widespread name recognition, Giglio may face an uphill battle to unseat McCarthy.
