Ex-Marine GameStop worker allegedly gunned down college student who stole Pokemon cards

A retired Marine who worked as a clerk at a Florida GameStop store has been charged with murder after police say he killed a shoplifter who tried to steal $600 worth of Pokemon trading cards.

Derrick Guerrero, 33, was working a shift at a video game retailer in a suburban Fort Lauderdale mall Tuesday night when a robber grabbed five boxes of “ultra-premium” Pokemon Scarlet & Violet cards and ran for the exit, Pembroke Pines police said. in a report issued Wednesday.

The cards, based on the popular Japanese media franchise, retail for $120 a box.

Guerrero pulled a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, hitting the shoplifter in the side, police said.

The victim dropped the stolen card and ran outside to a waiting pickup truck, where his girlfriend called the police.

He died three hours later in hospital.

The victim’s family identified him to NBC 6 as 21-year-old Chadrick Coats.

His grandmother said Coats was a “good kid” and a sophomore at Florida Memorial University.

Police said store security cameras showed that Coats never threatened Guerrero or brandished a weapon.

During Guerrerro’s initial appearance in court Wednesday, his attorney said he was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corps after 10 years of service and was working as an assistant manager at GameStop to support his wife and two daughters.

Guerrero had been the victim of a robbery at work on September 11 and had bought the gun for his personal protection, police said.

A judge set Guerrero’s bond at $25,000 and ordered him to wear a GPS monitor if he posts bail.
