The Apple Watch worn by a retired police chief who was fatally clipped while bicycling in Las Vegas alerted authorities to an emergency — playing a worrisome automated message as panic could be heard in the background, according to newly released audio of the 911 call.
Emergency dispatchers were contacted by the smartwatch when Andreas Probst, 64, was thrown from his bike on August 14 after two teenagers allegedly hit him as he pedaled on the side of the road. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital and two teenagers were arrested for allegedly beating him on purpose.
“This Apple Watch owner has had a bad fall and their watch is unresponsive,” the automated message said, according to an audio recording obtained by TMZ.
The watch then provides Probst’s location and states that the message will repeat itself in five seconds.
As the message continued to play on loop, a shocked crowd could be heard in the background, according to the audio.

A man can be heard in the background saying he saw a man fly off his bike as the car continued.
“He’s breathing, he’s breathing, don’t touch him” a woman can be heard shouting to others as a man appears to tell the cyclist not to move.
The gut-wrenching moment when Probst was fatally struck was caught on video. It shows the cyclist swerving into the windshield before landing on the side of the road.

The driver was heard asking his laughing friend, “Ready?” as he sped right behind the retired cop.
“Yeah, kick his ass,” the passenger told the driver before the car was driven into the now-viral video.
The alleged driver, Jesus Ayala, who was 17 at the time of the incident, and the alleged passenger, Jzamir Keys, have been charged with manslaughter and other felony charges. Both are being tried as adults.
Their booking photos were released on Monday.
Ayala, now 18, and Keys, were charged as part of a crime that involved attempting to injure another bicyclist before crashing into Probst, KLAS previously reported, citing sources and public records.
The other bicyclist, 72, who was allegedly hit told emergency dispatch “this car just hit me with my bike,” according to audio obtained by TMZ.
“He was behind me, I was watching him in my rear view mirror on my bike and I was going ‘oh s—t.’ I went to the right as far as I could against the side of the road,” said the victim, noting that the driver kept honking his horn behind him. “He did it on purpose … he could have killed me.”
Probst had moved to Sin City after he retired as police chief in Bell, California, in 2009.
“Andy’s life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that other people’s lives mattered,” said his daughter Taylor, calling her father “a man of honor and integrity.”
