Exhilarating video shows elephant fight off hungry crocodile

This crocodile’s eyes are definitely bigger than its stomach.

A thrilling video captures the moment an elephant thwarts a hungry crocodile attack by swinging the reptile from its tail.

The large animal was wading through the shallow waters of the Luangwa River in Western Zambia when the crocodile latched on.

The elephant sprinted inland, but stopped at the edge of the beach when it realized the crocodile wasn’t going to give up a potential meal so easily.

It spins in circles many times, switching directions every few seconds, while seriously flicking its tail/

The elephant finally shook off the starving crocodile with one last swipe of its tail before nonchalantly charging onto dry land, leaving the reptile slinking backwards under the murky water.

A group of lucky safari guides happened to drive past the river just in time to witness the drama unfold.

“It was one of those days where we went back to camp from home on our day off. Just normal driving, or so we thought. Little did we know that we would witness a once-in-a-lifetime event,” 53-year-old safari guide Emmanuel Sauti, who filmed the encounter, told LatestSightings.com.

Sauti said he couldn’t help but be nervous about the crocodile, which obviously made the target too big.

Wild crocodiles tend to eat smaller prey, such as antelope, lizards, small frogs and fish, according to Australia’s Northern Territory government.

“I was really excited to witness something rare. And boy, is it a sight to behold! The elephant fought well, and the crocodile didn’t back down either,” said Sauti.

“I must say, it was one of the happiest moments of my career as a safari guide. And the fact that it was the first time I saw an elephant fighting a crocodile made it even more special.”

Sauti says it will go down as his favorite wildlife sighting he’s seen on the job.

“It’s not every day you get to witness something like an elephant fighting a crocodile. These sightings are rare and precious, and it’s moments like these that make me grateful for the job I have.”
