Family of autistic Jewish teen who had swastika carved on his back by classmates sues school

The family of an autistic Jewish high school student who had a swastika carved on his back in a vicious antisemitic attack by a classmate is suing his Las Vegas school.

The abused teen and her mother, identified only as SK and CK in court papers, allege the Clark County School District not only failed to protect the 18-year-old, but dropped the ball on providing a proper education.

“In the beginning, the district failed to prepare [the student] a safe school environment that is free from harassment, intimidation and bullying,” according to the complaint filed Nov. 13 with the Nevada Department of Special Education.

“Specifically, on March 9, 2023, [the student] coming home from school with a swastika physically carved on his back and the service dog bag torn apart and sewn back together,” he said. “[He] refused to enter that particular bathroom after that day. The district denied any knowledge of the incident taking place.”

The teenager was home schooled.

“This horrific act against a defenseless Jewish student is a stark reminder of the deep-rooted issue of antisemitism that persists in our society,” Ziporah Reich, director of litigation at the Lawfare Project, which filed the complaint, said in a statement.

According to the complaint, the district also failed to provide the student with an appropriate education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, despite years at the school.

The complaint demands the district pay for the teenager to attend outside programs and reimburse the family for any expenses they incurred as a result of the assault and poor education.

In an email Thursday, the Clark County School District said it does not comment on pending litigation.

The school bathroom attack preceded a surge in antisemitic incidents at schools and college campuses across the country following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by radical terrorists Hamas and the subsequent military response from the Jewish state in the Gaza Strip.
