Family of grandpa shot dead for blocking bus aisle with his leg shocked at 13-year-old alleged killer’s age, will ‘fight’ for teen to be tried as adult

The family of a Colorado grandfather shot to death for blocking a city bus lane with his foot last month is baffled by the young age of the teen’s alleged killer and is demanding he be tried as an adult.

“It’s heartbreaking to know that there are young boys out there with guns, and it’s unbelievable,” Richard Sanchez’s daughter, Krystal, told Fox 31 Wednesday about hearing her father’s suspected killer’s age.

Sanchez, 60, was shot and killed when he argued with a 13-year-old suspect on a JPJ bus in Denver on January 27.

Police believe the argument between the alleged killer and Sanchez started because the elderly man was blocking the aisle with his foot.

The shooting happened around 6:41 pm at the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue — about 3 miles from Empower Field at Mile High, the Denver Broncos’ stadium.

Less than a week after the heartless murder, police arrested the teenager on February 1.

His name is being withheld because of his age.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office said the teenager — who was initially charged as a juvenile — is expected to be formally charged with the murder this week, according to Inside Edition.

Sanchez was gunned down just blocks from his home and his family is still coming to terms with the death.

“How could he do this without knowing someone? And more than one foot is in the hallway, like an old man. Like not an old man, but 60 years old — he’s a grandfather,” Krystal Sanchez said.

The grandfather’s family was not told Sanchez was killed until they went to report him missing and were told he had been shot and died at the hospital.

“It’s hard to wrap our heads around it. It comes down to him not being here not coming home,” Sanchez’s other daughter, Miranda, told Fox 31.

“Everything in our house reminds us of him. You know, looking out the window and opening the curtains. You know, just little things,” said Krystal Sanchez.

The daughters have vowed to ensure the 13-year-old accused of killing their father will be tried as an adult.

Police arrested a 13-year-old suspect in connection with Sanchez’s Feb. 1 slaying, after he allegedly killed a grandfather over an argument about his foot blocking a driveway.

“We will fight for it,” Krystal Sanchez told the outlet.

“We don’t know if we’re going to get it, but it’s something we want as a family, and we want justice for our dad. Because he doesn’t deserve to go out like this.”

At least 178 passengers were reported assaulted or injured while using JPJ transit in 2021 and the first two months of 2022, according to JPJ records shared by Fox 31.
