Family of NYC tot who died after inhaling fentanyl at day care hires attorney; siblings now afraid to go to school, dad says

The heartbroken father of a 1-year-old boy who died after inhaling fentanyl at a Bronx daycare who served as a drug factory custodian has hired a lawyer — and said Monday that his other four children don’t want to go to school because they are now afraid they will never return home.

“They don’t want to die at school,” Otoniel Feliz, the father of the tragic Nicholas Feliz Dominici, told reporters as he was joined by his lawyer, Jeffrey Chartier, outside the family’s home in Kingsbridge.

“My four children don’t want to go to school because they don’t want to be like Nicholas [to happen to them],” he continued. “It’s so hard … we’re all heartbroken.”

Feliz, a golf course maintenance worker in Westchester County, said her son had only been going to nearby Divino Nino Daycare for a week before his death on Friday.

“Drugs… this is dangerous,” he said. “My son died. But it can be yours.”

Two people – Grei Mendez De Ventura, 36, the owner of the nursery and his cousin Caristo Acevedo Brito, 41 – were arrested on Sunday and charged with murder over Dominici’s death. Police are still hunting for Ventura’s husband, who lives with her next door to the center.

Fentanyl, a powerful opioid — which is at least 50 times stronger than heroin — has been cut for sale at day care centers, allowing it to float into the air and get into children’s lungs, authorities said.

Three other children – two 2-year-old boys and an 8-month-old girl – remained hospitalized after they were exposed, authorities said.

On Monday, Mayor Eric Adams said the three other children were saved using naloxone, the overdose reversal drug commonly known by its brand name, Narcan.

“It’s a tragedy — and it’s a preventable tragedy, which is the worst,” Chartier, the Feliz family’s attorney, told The Post.

“The saddest thing is, you entrust the welfare of your children to people, and they violate that trust and cause the death of your child – there is nothing worse,” he added.

The family found the day care center through a local community center, their lawyer said.

And Feliz said they fill out a lot of paperwork to make sure it fits.

“Parents are supposed to take care of their children, and when we trust them to do the same – it’s not the same,” he said.

“This is something that should never happen.”
