Family of South Carolina teen shot dead in ‘stupid’ years-long feud claim officials stopped them from facing accused killers in court

Relatives of a South Carolina boy allegedly killed in a years-long “stupid” feud with another teenager have accused officials of preventing them from confronting his accused killer.

Alexis Wise, the sister of 16-year-old shooting victim Caleb Wise, told WIS-TV that her family had planned to see accused killers Jahkeem Griffin and Karlos Gibson, both 17, when they faced a judge for the first time on Tuesday.

His family along with two other teenagers who were shot to death said they were told to be at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center for a 2 p.m. hearing — only to learn the accused killer had arrived before the family arrived.

“We want to be there!” Wise’s sister told a local station, holding back tears.

He was angry that his family – as well as fellow victims Jakobe Fanning, 16, and Dre’Von Riley, 17 – were being neglected in their time of grief.

“I feel like we as a grieving family – because other families are here as well – and we as a grieving family shouldn’t be able to get away,” Alexis said.

One consolation, he said, was that the accused was not offered bond at the missed family hearing, with the judge saying it would have to be set later in general session, WIS-TV said.

“They shouldn’t be getting bond because this shouldn’t be happening,” Alexis told the outlet, adding: “My brother is 16, [he] don’t mess with anyone.”

Griffin and Gibson are being tried as adults on charges including murder and attempted murder for Sunday’s shooting that also injured a 14-year-old boy.

Another 14-year-old boy – who has not been identified because of his age – has also been charged in connection with the shooting.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said the shooting occurred in the middle of a dispute over a burglary from two years earlier, although he declined to provide further details.

It was “over something stupid,” the sheriff said. “About something that happened a few years ago. The beef continued to grow and then the young people decided that they would settle it by shooting.

“You have three teenagers who will never see adulthood,” he added. “What is this for? Misunderstanding? ‘I don’t like you, you did something to me, so I’m going to pay you back, so I’m going to kill you’?”

Wise’s godmother said the shooting has devastated several families.

“We’re not going to get Caleb back,” the unidentified woman told WIS-TV.

“The young man is in prison for life … We need to visit Caleb in the tombstone, their families need to visit them behind bars.”

As the family waited outside, a judge decided not to set bond for the two teenagers, who are being tried as adults.

The three teenagers opened fire on their victims as they sat in front of an abandoned house in Columbia, the state capital, shortly after 2 p.m., police said at a press conference Monday.

The gunman allegedly attacked the teenagers when they tried to retreat to the back of the house before fleeing.

It remains unclear how the defendant obtained the weapon.

Griffin and Gibson are due back in court on November 8 to face the charges as adults.

The 14-year-old suspect will also appear before a judge in family court on an unspecified date.
