The head of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners’ audit committee on Friday demanded that District Attorney Fani Willis provide information related to her appointment of Nathan Wade as special prosecutor in the 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump.
The request by Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis is part of an investigation into potential “misuse” of taxpayer funds as a result of Wade’s appointment by Willis while the two were embroiled in an alleged affair.
“Separate from any potential investigation by the State of Georgia, this situation requires verification of whether County funds provided for the operation of your office and its prosecutorial functions were used in an appropriate manner, and whether any payment of County funds to Mr. Wade was converted to your personal gain in the form of subsidized travel or other gifts,” Ellis’ letter to Willis, obtained by the Washington Post, states.
The attorney for the special prosecutor’s wife, Jocelyn Wade, submitted bank records to Cobb County Superior Court, as part of the divorce proceedings, that allegedly show that Nathan Wade bought tickets for himself and Willis to fly to San Francisco and Miami together, also as a $2,600 Royal Caribbean cruise package.

The purchases indicate that Wade used at least part of the $654,000 he was paid by Fulton County as part of his work on the Trump case to lavish gifts on Willis, according to Trump co-defendant Michael Roman, who brought the alleged infidelity to light in court filings. earlier this month.
Ellis asked Willis to provide his audit committee with a contract or service agreement with the special prosecutor in the Trump case; invoices for services, fees and expenses; information about the method he used to determine the hourly rate he paid his special prosecutor; and information about why hourly wages may vary between special prosecutors, among other requests.
Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) alleged in a letter to the Georgia State Bar earlier this week that Willis paid Wade “78.57% more than other attorneys appointed to the case” and cast doubt on the special prosecutor’s qualifications to handle Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act cases (RICO) against Trump and his co-defendants.
“That represents an exorbitant salary for someone who appears to have no experience in trying RICO cases,” Mills said. “Again, there is an obvious and compelling conclusion to be drawn from this, if proven true: Wade was overpaid because of his sexual relationship with the DA.”
Ellis asked Willis to provide information to his committee by February 2.
