Is it an awards ceremony if something controversial doesn’t happen?
It’s become a habit for fans to criticize moments at almost every award ceremony, and the just-concluded 80th Golden Globes Awards had some beautiful moments that made fans wag their tongues.
It just so happened that Regina Hall seemed to take a jab at Kevin Costner for his absence at the Golden Globes Awards, and fans weren’t too cool about the joke.
Regina Hall Jokes About Kevin Costner’s Absence At The Event
In a viral clip circulating the internet, the “Little” actor took to the stage to present the award for best performance by an actor in a television series – a drama in which Costner emerged as the winner. While giving his speech, Hall joked about Costner’s absence and laughed.

Reading from a Teleprompter, Hall addressed the absence of the “JFK” cast saying, “[Kevin] would love to be here…” at which point, he laughed before saying, “I always love the way they write this. It’s like, ‘He really wants to be — .’ No, I’m sure he did. I mean, if he wins then he really wants to be here. But you won, so…”
The “Think Like A Man” actor also shared that the 66-year-old’s absence was “due to unprecedented weather and flooding, he had to shelter in Santa Barbara.”
Again, Hall laughed out loud before motioning for the audience to pray for the star cast and those affected by the storm.
Before the prestigious ceremony, Costner had issued a no-show on his Instagram, begging his fans to forgive him. The father of nine revealed that he and his family were unfortunately trapped by the storm. Additionally, he stated that he was sad to miss the event and apologized to the cast members of “Yellowstone.”

Filling the comments are several messages from fans expressing concern for his safety. One fan wrote, “As long as you and your family are safe – that’s all that matters.”
Fans Had Various Reactions To Regina Hall’s Actions
While viewers at the Golden Globes found Hall’s performance funny, that wasn’t the case online. Many fans were not impressed with the “Honk For Jesus” star’s joke on Twitter as they criticized him for laughing at something so life-threatening.
Some fans also carry gender and race stereotypes. This Twitter user drew this picture, writing, “Imagine if a white man had accepted an award for a black woman and behaved in this arrogant and condescending manner. All hell will break loose.”
Former radio host John Ziegler also shared this view, tweeting, “Ugh, can you imagine if this Kevin Costner #GoldenGlobes2023 race/gender situation was reversed?!” One netizen attacked the “About Last Night” star’s professional ethics, writing, “Regina Hall is very rude and disrespectful to Kevin Costner, the cast of Yellowstone and all the people of Santa Barbara. Wow, he needs a lesson in professionalism.”
Another observer expressed shock at Hall’s behavior, and another claimed the actress was trivializing the suffering of the Santa Barbarians with her jokes. A fan told this to the 52-year-old actress. “Shame on Regina Hall for feeling that there was comedy in the fact that Kevin Costner was stuck in Santa Barbara. Are people unaware of the massive flooding in SB and the fact that the highway between SB and LA is closed? WTF is wrong with the person? “
However, it wasn’t all negative reactions, as some followers managed to find humor in Hall’s acting. One fan tweeted, “People are so hurt by Regina Hall making a little joke about why Kevin Costner isn’t at the Golden Globes…Get a life.”
One admirer couldn’t help but praise Hall’s behavior, and another who fully understood the joke took the liberty of explaining it. The user tweeted, “Regina Hall is not mocking the real victims of this storm. He mocked Kevin Costner at his mansion in Santa Barbara, which was only a 2-hour drive from the awards. He’s right. And funny.”
“Yellowstone” Star Wins Award At Golden Globes
Although the “Waterworld” actor was not present at the event, he won the award for his role in the television series, “Yellowstone.” Costner was nominated along with Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”), Diego Luna (“Andor”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), and Adam Scott (“Severance”).
This marks “Yellowstone’s” first Golden Globe win since its first broadcast. The series, which had two prequels released in “1883” and “1923,” was relaunched in 2018, taking on the Western genre.
