Fat Joe recently opened up about his incredible journey to health and fitness in an interview with Men’s health as part of their “Hip Hop Health” series, which pays homage to hip-hop’s 50th anniversary by exploring the health transformation of Black and Brown men.
Sharing her deeply personal story, the 52-year-old artist reveals how losing over 200 pounds not only saved her life but also introduced her to a whole new version of herself.
The “Lean Back” hitmaker said the catalyst for her transformation came during a period of deep depression following the sudden deaths of several close friends from heart disease. Among them is his best friend and mentee, Big Pun. The loss hit him hard and forced him to face the harsh reality of his own health.
Looking back on the experience, Fat Joe recalls attending Big Pun’s funeral and feeling an overwhelming sense of self-awareness. “I went to his funeral and I felt like Ebenezer Scrooge. Like, I see me,” he shared. “And I was looking at his daughter. She is the same age as my daughter. I said, ‘You need to lose weight; if not, you get out of here.’”

In a vivid revelation, Fat Joe vividly describes the depth of his depression, comparing it to “the most complex Rubik’s Cube” imaginable. He also drew parallels to the scene from “Matrix Resurrections,” where Keanu Reeves, who portrays Neo, finds himself sitting in a bathtub with a rubber duck on his head.
“That’s what depression is for me,” Joe explained. “When you fight yourself, there are no walls high enough for you to build. There is no island you can go to. There’s no place you can go where you run away from it, because you’re fighting your mind.”
He continued, “You wake up, and then when you think about it, your brain sends you a message to say, ‘We shouldn’t be happy.’ And then you fall back into depression. I lost a lot of people, and unfortunately, I can’t sit there and be quiet because I know it’s something that led me down that path. So I have to push forward.”

Despite the daily battle he faces with depression, Fat Joe shares that he has been actively working to reshape his habits and mindset to pave the way for a brighter future. She shares invaluable wisdom about knowing your triggers, saying, “You have to know what gets you there and run in the other direction. When I’m not happy, I go in the happy direction.
Recalling one of the sources of his joy, he continued, “When I arrived at my mother’s house that I bought for her, it was a simple house, it put the biggest smile on my face. And when I went inside, he was happy and my dad was happy and everybody was happy. I have never told my daughter ‘no’ one time in her life to anything. It’s always ‘yes’. That makes me happy.”
The Grammy nominee also added that he’s “a great movie guy.” “John Wick 4. Air. That makes me happy. CNN makes me happy. When you are on the road, you feel very happy to sleep in your bed,” he added.

The rapper shared an eye-opening conversation with one of his drivers, Steve, that made him realize the deeper significance of his “Fat” nickname.
Steve, a large man, expressed his admiration for Fat Joe’s always stylish and confident demeanor. He explained how Fat Joe’s presence has given other individuals, including himself, a sense of confidence and pride in their bodies. “Man, you always fly, Joe. All the big guys, you give us confidence and make us think that big flies. You’re Fat Joe,” Steve said appreciatively.
However, Joe’s recent weight loss journey has surprised Steve and the others. They felt mixed emotions when they saw their role models diminish. Joe has become an inspiration for body positivity, and his transformation leaves them feeling a bit left out. His driver Steve added, “Well, man, we feel like you’re abandoning us. For years, you’ve been telling us being a fat man is great. We’re down on you, big boys.”
This heartwarming conversation left Fat Joe torn between pride in his new health and confusion about the effect his weight loss would have on those who looked up to him. “I’m here, giving confidence to plus-sized people, and they feel like I’m leaving them out,” she said. “They didn’t realize I was just thinking, yo, I really want to be here for a long time. I really want to work out. I really want to be healthy. I want to be here.”
