Dr. Anthony Fauci once again rejected the use of masks as a way to reduce COVID-19 as he acknowledged that extensive studies found face masks made no difference in the course of the outbreak.
“I’m concerned that people won’t follow the recommendations,” Fauci told CNN’s Michael Smerconish Saturday in a segment marking the rise in COVID cases across the country.
Federal agencies and state and local governments set onerous mask mandates for airplanes, schools, public transit, restaurants, workplaces and more starting in 2020 — thanks in large part to Fauci, the public face of the nation’s official COVID response.
As the White House’s chief medical adviser, Fauci gave conflicting advice about the effectiveness of masks, first saying they were unnecessary for the general public, then that “universal masking is the most practical way.”

As of May, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that unvaccinated children still need to wear masks when playing with friends.
But in February, a major study from the Cochrane Library found that wearing them is pointless.
“There is still no evidence that masks are effective during an outbreak,” Tom Jefferson, lead author of the study, said in February.

“There is no evidence that they make any difference. Period.”
Confronted with Jefferson’s quote, Fauci backed down.
“When you’re talking about the impact on the epidemic or the epidemic as a whole, the data is less robust,” he admits.

“But there are other studies, Michael, that show at the individual level, for individuals,” they may be protective, he said.
Mask and vaccine mandates have been hot issues in the Republican presidential primary.
