An FBI agent was kidnapped Wednesday in Washington, DC, a theft that came amid a sharp increase in the number of car thefts in the nation’s capital.
Two people committed an armed carjacking that afternoon, police said.
The car was found about 30 minutes later about a mile away, the Metropolitan Police said.

The FBI’s Washington field office and the Metropolitan Police Department’s carjacking task force are investigating, the FBI said in a statement.
Car thefts in the capital have more than doubled this year, rising 104%.
Recent victims include a diplomat from the United Arab Emirates and US Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas.

Violent crime in Washington has also increased this year, up more than 40% over last year.
