Fire at nightclub hosting several birthday parties kills at least 13 in Spain

More than a dozen people were killed in a fire that raged inside one of several adjacent nightclubs in the southeastern Spanish city of Murcia early Sunday morning.

Mayor José Ballesta write on X that 13 people had died in the fire, revising earlier reports as more victims were found amid the smoking rubble.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Fonda nightclub in the city’s Atalayas district, the southeastern city’s emergency services said.

The fire then spread to the side of the Teatre nightclub, a spokesman for the club said. It also spread to a third nightclub next door.

The victim was found at the Fonda nightclub, which suffered extensive damage, including a collapsed roof, according to Diego Seral, a spokesman for Spain’s National Police.

The collapsed roof at the club has complicated recovery efforts for first responders, officials said.

Video posted online showed thick, dark smoke billowing from the nightclub’s windows as firefighters worked against the orange flames that burned in the darkness.

Ballesta told reporters that seven bodies were found on the first floor, where the fire broke out.

About 40 firefighters and 12 fire trucks were sent to the scene, online writing rescue service.

Emergency services continued to work in the area, Ballesta said at around 2pm local time, hours after the fire first broke out at around 6am

According to Spanish media, several birthday celebrations were held in the clubs overnight.

“I think we left from 30 seconds to 1 minute before the alarm went off and all the lights went out (and) screams saying there was a fire,” one survivor, who was not identified, told Reuters.

“Five family members and two friends are missing.”

“We are devastated,” Ballesta said on Spanish TV channel 24h, adding that rescuers were still looking for several people reported missing.

Four people were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire could not be immediately determined.
