A 14-year-old boy was arrested in Riverview, Florida, on Saturday after he allegedly shot and killed his mother and left his mother’s boyfriend with multiple gunshot wounds, officials said.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday about the incident in the Summerfield section, Sheriff Chad Chronister said at a news conference.
“The scene behind me is one nightmares are made of,” Chronister said. “And that’s very heartbreaking.”
Police officers responded to the scene and found a 14-year-old boy who allegedly pointed a gun at his own head at least six times, threatening to kill himself.
A 16-minute negotiation ensued, and deputies fired a non-lethal bullet at the boy, so he wouldn’t reach for the gun again.
He was later arrested.
Chronister said deputies then responded to a call about a man who had fled his home after being shot five times, suffering from gunshot wounds to the lower body, hands and face.
The man was identified as the boyfriend of the suspect’s mother.
The victim was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.

Chronister said deputies spoke with the man’s brother, who was at the home where the woman’s body was found.
The brother told deputies he heard his mother and her boyfriend arguing before he heard several gunshots. He came out of his bedroom and saw the suspect shoot his mother.
The suspect then pointed a gun at his brother who fled the scene.
Chronister said he believed the 14-year-old shot his mother’s boyfriend before killing his own mother following an argument.
The sheriff said the boy then began running around the neighborhood looking for his mother’s boyfriend and “getting work done.”
“This family’s life has changed forever. They lost a mother,” said Chronister. “This is heartbreaking. Our suspect is only 14 years old. This 14-year-old boy’s life is over. He will never see the outside of a detention facility.”
The suspect’s sister was not injured in the incident. Chronister said the suspect has no criminal history.
The sheriff’s office is awaiting a search warrant.
