A 2-year-old Florida boy suffered severe burns on 18% of his body in a freak accident during a camping trip — when he tripped and fell into a fire pit.
Finny, from St. Cloud, was running and playing with a bubble wand on New Year’s Day when he fell backwards into a fire pit at a campground in Gainesville, Fox 35 reported.
“When I held him, his pants melted. They are like nylon material and they melt. They melted on me and I tore them off,” her mother, Tabitha Shay, told the outlet.
“He randomly ran backwards right into the fire,” Finny’s dad, Jeff Strait, told Fox 35.
“You know, what are the odds? It’s hard not to blame yourself at first.”
Shay said doctors told her that her oldest son, Weston, 11, prevented Finny from suffering more serious injuries when he ran into the fire to save the child.

“He grabbed Finny’s sweater and he told me, ‘Mom, it took me a moment to process what happened.’ And then I said, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and I just pulled it out,” Shay told Fox 35.
“Somehow he managed to do it without getting any boo-boo on him, which is a miracle. But we are very proud of it. Very proud,” he said.
Finny was rushed to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he was treated for second- and third-degree burns, according to the outlet.

The parents said they were overwhelmed by the support they received from hospital staff, family and friends.
“I thought I had a handful of friends, and it turns out I have a whole village of friends,” Shay said.
“I am relieved how many people have contacted us for help. From the bottom of our hearts, we really appreciate it,” added Strait.

The family has set up a GoFundMe donation page to help with costs.
“Imagine starting the New Year with a phone call from your son telling you that your grandson is on his way to the hospital because he fell into a bonfire. My heart stopped,” Tami Basye wrote in the donation.

He said, Finny’s burns covered the backs of his legs and hands.
“He is expected to make a full recovery thank God but it will take some time. My son and his wife have four children and they are all stuck outside the city to support each other,” Basye wrote.
“Both parents are unemployed. Once discharged from the hospital, Finny will need continued healing time at home before returning to the care center,” he added.
