Florida man caught on camera throwing tiny Shih Tzu into garbage dumpster, police say

A heartless thug is facing felony charges after being caught on surveillance video throwing a helpless puppy into a trash can, police in Florida said Monday.

Anthony Bellman, 55, pulled up behind the Family Dollar store in Lehigh Acres near Cape Coral on Thursday and took his 16-year-old Shih Tzu dog named Xyla out of his car in a garbage bag.

He then tossed the bag several feet into the air and into a trash can before driving away, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said at a press briefing Monday.

“This hurts me while you’re watching this,” a visibly angry sheriff told reporters. “You can see in this video that he completely ignored Xyla.

“No living being deserves to be thrown away like ordinary garbage,” he said. “Suspect [was] really wasted life. This video is disgusting.”

Marceno said Bellman told his family he took Xyla to a local humane society but instead dumped the dog.

The sheriff’s office tracked down Bellman through a microchip implanted in the puppy and deputies were at her door in Lehigh Acres — about 16 miles east of Fort Myers — within two hours of Xyla’s rescue.

Surveillance footage behind a Florida dollar store caught the dog’s cruel owner dumping a Shih Tzu named Xyla in the trash. Bellman, who authorities say is a relative of Xyla’s original owner, even answered the door wearing the same clothes as in the video, Marceno told reporters.

He was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and his name will be added to the county’s Animal Abuse Registry, the sheriff said.

He said Bellman, who was allegedly arrested for drunken driving in Ohio, was released on bond.

Marceno said the arrests were made by the sheriff’s Animal Cruelty Task Force, which he founded, and so far has logged 15 animal cruelty arrests and thousands of abuse complaints.

Marceno said Xyla was treated by a veterinarian and is now healthy and ready for adoption.

“We picked up this trash and gave him a ride to the Marceno Motel,” he added of Bellman — using his nickname for the Lee County Jail.

“You can’t abuse animals in Lee County,” the sheriff added.
