Florida mom, 21, charged with manslaughter for baby’s death after botched home birth

A 21-year-old Florida woman has been charged with manslaughter after giving birth while home alone — and allegedly did nothing when the baby boy suffocated while trapped between her boxer shorts and her leg.

Bianca DeSouza, of Boca Raton, was arrested Friday on charges of child homicide and aggravated neglect with great bodily injury in connection with May’s death last year, online court records show.

He later admitted to leaving the newborn trapped with only his head sticking out of his boxers — and surfing social media on his phone before checking on her, the affidavit said.

Her mother later found the baby unresponsive in bed while her daughter – then just 19 – was in the shower.

The mother called 911, and was heard yelling, “Bianca, what the–k!” and “the baby is dead.”

“Bianca giggled and said, ‘I’m sorry, my mom is tough,'” the affidavit said of the 911 call.

Palm Beach sheriff’s deputies and fire crews administered CPR and epinephrine to the still-warm infant before taking him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

DeSouza was diagnosed as bipolar schizophrenic and admitted to frequent drinking and drug use throughout her pregnancy — including daily marijuana and vaping as well as Xanax, oxycodone and shots of Hennessy cognac, documents show.

The young mother-to-be initially wanted to terminate her pregnancy, but later planned to put the baby up for adoption, her mother told officials, according to the affidavit.

DeSouza later told investigators she was “confused” and “didn’t know what was going on” when she gave birth.

He was “wearing shorts that he pulled to the side at birth,” she said – with pathologists saying that a line on the baby’s neck showed he was trapped between the teenager’s thighs and his shorts.

The newborn “lay in his boxers for about ten minutes” and stopped crying with his head sticking out of his shorts, DeSouza said in an October interview about the pathology findings, the document said.

“He was just laying there and using his phone, Instagram,” the document said, quoting him as saying: “I was just sitting there.”

When she finally pulled the dead baby out, she “lay next to him for a moment before getting up to take a shower,” the document said.

The medical examiner listed the cause of death as asphyxia and the manner of death.

DeSouza was charged with negligent homicide of a child and aggravated child murder. He was jailed and later released on $25,000 bond.
