As firefighters raced to put out a fire at a Florida apartment early Tuesday, they found a woman stabbed to death inside and her three young children in critical condition, one of whom was an infant who later died at a hospital, authorities said.
The fire broke out around midnight at the Village Apartments on Beville Road in Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young told reporters at the scene.
“This is a horrific incident two days after a holiday centered around family,” Young said.
The baby was found in a cradle having a heart attack near his mother. The cause of the infant’s death and the condition of the two surviving children, ages 4 and 5, were not immediately given.
The mother’s name has not yet been released as authorities are working to notify her next of kin.
Authorities ruled the incident a homicide because the fire had two points of origin in the apartment, which is unusual, said Lt. Antwan Lewis of the Daytona Beach Fire Department to reporters.

Police have not yet named a suspect in connection with the stabbing or the fire.
Officials said one police officer was treated for smoke inhalation. It was unclear if other apartment units were affected.

“I’m very proud of all the officers who initially responded, as well as the firefighters and medical personnel,” Young said. “If it wasn’t for their actions, there probably would have been more lives lost.”
